Local Families to Host Lemonade Stands for 4-Year-Old With Wilm’s Tumor

Looking for some refreshment before Wednesday's Independence Day Parade? Stop by the block parties of 96th and Ridgeway from 3-5 p.m. or 95th and Trumbull from 5-7 p.m. to get some lemonade and support the family of a 4-year-old with cancer.

In May, Amy Jongsma, 4, graduated preschool. In June, she went to the hospital.

Doctors originally thought she had appendicitis. They quickly discovered that a tumor on her kidney had burst. She went into surgery, where doctors removed her kidney and discovered another tumor growing on her lung. Now diagnosed with Wilm’s Tumor, Amy has undergone radiation and starts the first of her 26 rounds of chemotherapy this week.

Brigid Jacobsen, a friend of the Jongsmas whose daughter Janie is friends with Amy, decided to start several lemonade stands to raise money for the Jongsmas’ medical bills. She and her kids, along with several other families, hope to help the Jongsmas financially, especially because of their recent move to Crown Point, Ind., from Evergreen Park shortly before discovering Amy’s tumor.
