On the article Update: Man Arrested in Stabbing Death of Joliet Teen in Romeoville

Karen Sorensen

This is not our decision. We can only release the information that the police give us. Until the 22-year-old is arrested and charged, there is no legal obligation for the police to release his name. If he is not charged, it's possible it will never be made public. However, when someone dies, it is always a matter of public record. We hope our readers understand that our goal is to provide as much information as possible when it's available, even if some of it is incomplete at the time of our post.

Robert -- This is not me being selective. This is me putting my foot down. From yesterday forward, racial comments that have nothing to do with the story will be removed. I am going to assume that you did not like the racist comments made about Hispanics any more than others liked racist comments about whites, blacks or any other group. So, I should think you would support such a change and not suggest that it's because we here at Patch are now trying to place the race card, too.

Commenters have been warned that any post that makes reference to race will be removed unless race is pertinent to the situation at hand, such as a description of a suspect, or the crime is racial in nature, such as a hate crime.

ReplyNo. When the information on the arrest was initially posted by the Will County jail, we used the photo that was there. We did not know it was a mugshot from a previous arrest. It was only later today that we realized that a newer one was added, and it now appears with this story.

ReplyOld Newspaper Guy -- Here's what the city's press release said: "The Joliet Junior College Foundation relocated the Cronin School to the Joliet Junior College Main Campus and restored it to its original condition in the 1930’s to serve as a living history museum." So, you can see how easy it is to misunderstand what was being said!

I had the same question, John, so I asked one of the police commanders. He said they very rarely use the attempted murder charge because in order to prove that in court, you have to have evidence that the person intended to kill the person but did not succeed. Aggravated battery, on the other hand, means one person attacked the other and the result was a serious injury.
