Tony Gambino III has apparently given up on trying to make a go of a restaurant at 3342 W. 95th St. in Evergreen Park. Connect to Patch: Oak Lawn / Evergreen Park / Beverly-Mt. Greenwood Gambino first tried it with one of his Taco Fresco franchises, which have been successful elsewhere in the Chicago area but didn’t catch on in Evergreen Park or Tinley Park. About a year ago, he borrowed a page from his family’s successful Moon’s Sandwich Shop at 16 S. Western Ave. and opened Tony Moon’s Burgers, which got generally good grades from online reviewers. But Moon’s Burgers closed abruptly at the beginning of November. The phone number has been disconnected and the shop has a “for rent” sign in the window. Demolition started earlier this month …

John and Gloria Arestis are 'still dancing' after 14 years in business.
John and Gloria Arestis opened Golden Griddle Restaurant and Pancake House with one goal in mind: help their two children and specifically, send them to college. Over fourteen years later, they have accomplished much more than that. In a time when independent, family-style restaurants seem to be shuttered everywhere, the Arestis have built a popular eatery at 3030 W. 95th St., Evergreen Park. Times were tough in the beginning, with Gloria working another job to bring in a paycheck. John worked seven days a week to keep the business going. Times are tough again, with the great recession; but unlike other family owned restaurants, the Arestis are hanging in there. Nineteen years after becoming a student at the Academy of Self Defense, Jeff Waldrom runs the school with his wife, teaching martial arts and life lessons.
When Jeff Waldrom became a student at the Academy of Self Defense nearly 20 years ago, he didn't think he’d eventually run the place. “I have been a part of its history since I was 16 years old,” said Waldrom, 35, who operates the school with his wife Pamela. Waldrom was a student 19 years ago, then became an instructor, and finally manager. "A pure love for this school, Martial Arts and a school full of some of the greatest people and students I have ever met” inspired the Waldroms to take over the Academy three years ago, Jeff Waldrom said. Calabria Imports in Evergreen Park is up and running as if they had been there for generations. Located where Greco's Catering used to be at 3512 W. 95th Street, the shop is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. A bustling weekday lunch crowd filed in as orders for sandwiches, deli meats and more were placed and filled. Employees didn’t skip a beat as customers came in hungry and walked out happy. The 51 year-old wedding photography and photofinishing business personally details its photos, rather than using a machine to get the job done, according to Denise Chakinis, one of the managers. Dave Payton knows when most states start their high school baseball seasons. He didn't always know that Florida began their season in January, or Mississippi and Arkansas tend to follow the sunshine state. Payton quickly learned those schedules as demand boomed for the baseball products his company, BaseballRacks.com, produces. At first Payton only needed to build baseball helmet racks for one local team. From there, a few more ordered. Today, Payton is shipping those racks and other baseball accessories all over the country. "We're probably in 48 states," Payton, who, along with his partner Rob LeVan, own BaseballRacks.com. Like most people, John DeBold used his first job as a teenager to gain experience for future positions. Unlike most people, DeBold's first job has eventually become his main job. First employed at Park Schwinn Cyclery in 1973, DeBold eventually purchased the business from its second owner in 1994. "I started here in the summer between eighth grade and my freshman year of high school," DeBold said. "I was working in the back, working the floor, doing repairs, building bikes." After my kids initially gave me a bad review of Moon's, what I found out was that they ordered the sausage burger expecting a hamburger, and when I finally gave it a try and ordered the actual hamburger (cheeseburger) I loved it. Only made it twice though before they closed. I hope someone finds something that works in that space. more ›
