Dignity Memorial Unveils Gatekeepers Garden

Seven very special Evergreen Parkers are honored with memorial.

Dignity Memorial unveiled their Gatekeepers Garden memorial in honor of seven community leaders at Evergreen Cemetery in Evergreen Park on Oct. 22. State Rep. Elgie Sims was in attendance as well as gospel artist Cynthia Eubanks.

Grave Defaced With Anti-Islamic Writing For Second Time This Month

An Evergreen Cemetery grave has been defaced with graffiti for the seventh time since March 2011. This time, however, police may have video.

OUTSIDE CHICAGO, IL—An Evergreen Cemetery grave was defaced with anti-Islamic writing sometime during the night on Aug. 28-29, said Evergreen Park Police Lt. Peter Donovan.  The grave site, which also features a bench and obelisk, was vandalized with black marker scribblings in a manner almost identical to what was discovered and cleaned up two weeks ago, Donovan said.  Unlike the prior incident, however, a video camera was trained on the scene. Renowned Catholic Priest Honored as an Evergreen Park Gatekeeper

Noted Chicago Catholic Priest George Clements moved to Evergreen Park 17 years ago and will be honored as a Gatekeeper at Evergreen Cemetery.

When legendary priest and Evergreen Park resident George Clements adopted his first son Joey over 30 years ago, he didn’t expect such a global uproar in the Catholic community.  It was the first time a priest had ever attempted to adopt a child, but after then-Cardinal Archbishop of Chicago John Patrick Cody forbade him, Pope John Paul II overruled. For more than 50 years, Clements, now 80, has been celebrated as a faith leader and Civil Rights activist, but he now has “Gatekeeper” to had to his extraordinary litany of accomplishments. Evergreen Cemetery Honors Chicago Gatekeepers, Re-Welcomes Black Community

Dignity Memorial at Evergreen Cemetery and Kenny Brothers Funeral Home will honor seven civic and religious leaders with their Gatekeepers Memorial Garden this autumn.

What began as plans for a memorial garden for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. evolved into a dedication to living legends and an invitation to the African-American community back into an Evergreen Park company. Dignity Memorial at Evergreen Cemetery and Kenny Brothers Funeral Home identified seven religious and civic leaders of mixed denominations who have each changed their communities in some way throughout their lifetime, and will officially honor them with a dedication and monument in the Gatekeepers Garden at Evergreen Cemetery, 3401 W. 87th St. this autumn. “We want to have living legends,” said legendary priest George Clements, who is among the seven inaugural Dignity Memorial Gatekeepers. “We want to have people around who […

New Garden Planned for Evergreen Cemetery

Plans for the new garden at Evergreen Cemetery will honor Chicago's religious and civic leaders will be announced at a breakfast Saturday, April 28.

Plans for a new garden at Evergreen Cemetery honoring several of Chicago's religious and civic leaders will be announced at a faith-based community breakfast Saturday, April 28, officials announced this week. Details about the "Gatekeepers Garden" will be shared at the 8 a.m. Chicago Faith-Based Community Breakfast on Saturday at the Chicago Hilton and Towers International Ballroom, 720 South Michigan in Chicago. The garden will be unveiled in August 2012. According to a press release, the term "gatekeepers" has been bestowed upon seven influential leaders in the community.
