Evergreen Park Community High School District 231 said it has a few capital projects could cost millions of dollars. Current needs include a new football field, new science labs and removing asbestos from the auditorium.
As a stakeholder of Evergreen Park Community High School District 231, what’s a greater priority? A new football field? Vamped up science labs? How about removing asbestos from the auditorium? Discussions of the district’s possible capital improvement projects began Thursday but are far from finished. The trouble is, board members don’t yet have all the facts in front of them. After reviewing financial forecasts, however, staff members estimated that a new athletic turf field could reasonably cost upwards of $1 million, whereas a rehabbed auditorium and gym that included a new HVAC could be nearly $1.3 million. The money, they said, could be drawn from the life-safety, operations and maintenance or working cash funds. Meanwhile, the extent…

The board meeting opened with a public hearing for the 2011-2012 budget adoption, and after approved it.
Unlike many other schools in Illinois that have been hit with budget woes, the Evergreen Park Community High School Board of Education approved a budget for the 2011-2012 school year without making cuts that would impact students’ education. To date, the school’s direct budgetary revenues amount to $17,187,167. This year they will spend $16,668,801 leaving a surplus of $518,366 for next school year. “We’ve had a surplus the last couple of years. We’ve tried to be fiscally conservative (by) projecting expenditures high and revenues low, so that we can come in under budget,” said Supt. M. Elizabeth Hart. And to make sure they don’t over spend, the board puts the brakes on spending on Mar. 1, anything after will have to wait until next year…

EPCHS holds students after school to keep them from fallen electrical wires. That incident report and more from the D229 board meeting last night.
It's safe to say that many high school students are thrilled when the classroom lights suddenly go out. But for administrators, faculty and staff at Evergreen Park Community High School, a power outage sparked by a Mylar balloon in early May was more than just a minor setback. “It was crazy,” said EPCHS Supt. M. Elizabeth Hart. “Kids were using their cell phones for light, and we had trouble communicating with teachers [because the phones were out].” At the risk of getting a 15,000 volt shock from fallen wires at the west entrance, students were held after school in their classrooms until clean up crews gave the OK. Patch will have that story and the names of next year's EPCHS student ambassadors. Until then, here's what happened at the …

Student ambassadors at Evergreen Park Community High are heading off to college, leaving big shoes to fill.
As graduation day approaches, student ambassadors at Evergreen Park Community High School District 231 will pass on responsibilities to a new batch of seniors. Both Farzaan Kassam and Emma Point, current ambassadors for the high school, have helped foster dialogue between students and the board since they were first inducted in August 2010. “It's really rare to find students that come to the board meetings to express ideas,” Kassam said. “Through us, they're able to get the expression of other students, because we're out there getting others' opinions and bringing them back to the board.” As board members, Kassam and Point hold advisory, non-voting positions. If students have concerns with school guidelines or services – from textbooks, to…

Last night was election night, but only amongst board members at Evergreen Park Community High School District 231. Earlier this month, school boards across Cook County held general elections, so yesterday's meeting was a chance for D231 to reorganize. “I do solemnly swear,” each member read in unison, “to faithfully discharge the duties of board member...in accordance with the constitution of the U.S., and the constitution of the State of Illinois.” Shortly after their oath, members unanimously voted that Raymond Trzeciak maintain his position as board president, Cheryl Pinotti keep her seat as vice president. Christopher Trzeciak also kept his seat as secretary of the District 231 Board of Education. Members also appointed …
