Photos: Saint Xavier University Annual Ball Raises Almost $400K

Saint Xavier University's recent ball raised money for student scholarships. See all the night's action.

Saint Xavier University recently raised more than $397,000 for student scholarships at its 28th Annual President’s Scholarship Ball – a new fundraising record for the Ball. More than 430 guests attended the evening of dinner and dancing at the Hilton Chicago.  The Ball also celebrated Henry Bros. Company, the 2013 Shield of Saint Xavier recipients. Henry Bros. Company has been among Saint Xavier’s most generous lifetime donors and supporters. It has supported the Scholarship Ball since 1990 and has served as the Dinner Sponsor at the Ball. William Callaghan, Sr. and George P. Henry were the second generation owners of the company from 1966 to 1987. William and his wife Maxine have attended Saint Xavier and Mercy Sisters fundraising events …

New Financial Lab Opens at Saint Xavier

The new lab at the neighborhood university provides students a hands-on look at real time financial markets.

It might look like a normal neighborhood house from the outside, but once you step inside things get a bit more high-tech.  Saint Xavier University's Graham School of Management recently opened the Center for the Study of Financial Markets and Derivatives. The hands-on learning environment gives students the opportunity to use financial technology.  "It is very powerful because students can see real-time data coming in," said Dr. Muhammad Chishty, the director of the center.  Much of the equipment was made possible through grants. Students can use FactSet and Bloomberg terminals, which gives them real time market information. Currently, the only other area schools that use FactSet are the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, …

As part of Patch's mission to not only cover the community, but actively engage with it, we hosted a debate viewing party at Saint Xavier University.  Students, most of whom will be first time voters, came out to watch the big show and share their thoughts. SXU Invites Community to Celebrate 2012 Homecoming Weekend

Saint Xavier celebrates homecoming weekend with "March of the Cougars," 5K run/walk and the big game against University of St. Francis. Vote for your favorite decorated Cougar statue.

Cougars will be on parade all weekend for Saint Xavier University's homecoming this Friday through Sunday, Sept. 28 through Sept. 29. Saint Xav's invites friends, family, alumni and residents from the surrouding neighborhoods and communities to help the Cougars celebrate homecoming weekend. In homage to Chicago's world-famous "Cows on Parade" exhibit, SXU staff, faculty, alumni, and student organizations "adopted" fiberglass cougar statues, created by Chicago Fiberglass Works, Inc., and decorated each with a unique theme. Cougars will be on display throughout the Homecoming Week at SXU's Chicago campus. Blackhawks Softball Classic Raises Money for Families of Fallen CPD and CFD

Mascots and former Blackhawks converge at Saint Xavier University for an afternoon of classic 16-inch softball with Chicago police officers and firefighters.

The NHL lockout may have postponed the Chicago Blackhawks’ annual fan festival at the United Center but it didn’t keep 23 former players from stopping by Saint Xavier University on Sunday afternoon for an afternoon of 16-inch softball. Blackhawk alumni—featuring such esteemed alum as Stan Mikita and Jack O’Callahan—faced off against members of the Chicago Police and Fire Departments for the fifth annual charity softball classic. The event benefited the Chicago Firefighters’ Ende, Menser, Walsh and Quinn (EMWQ) Retirees Widows and Children’s Assistance Fund and Chicago Police Memorial Foundation. Business Comings & Goings: Theater Remodeling Complete at Chicago Ridge Mall

Hostess outlet store remains open for business after a car drives through the front window, remodeling complete at Chicago Ridge Mall AMC Theater 6 and more business news for Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn, Mt. Greenwood and Beverly.

  AMC has finished updating the seats and screens at its six theaters inside Chicago Ridge Mall. As part of the renovation, AMC opened a new concession stand and MacGuffin’s Bar in June, which offers moviegoers beer, wine and cocktails to enjoy before, after and even during a movie. The dream of Oak Lawn residents Michael and Denise Stillman to turn the site of the classic baseball movie “Field of Dreams” into All-Star Ballpark Heaven continues to move ahead. City officials in Dyersville, Iowa, voted last week to rezone the site from agricultural to commercial, which was needed for the Stillmans’ plan to build a 24-field baseball and softball complex on the land. SXU Radio Broadcasts Vet Stories of Combat, Military Life

Saint Xavier University is hosting its first ever Veteran's 10-part radio series called Veteran Matters on 88.3 WXAV-FM.

Saint Xavier University will take listeners beyond the barracks and into the battlefields of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts through its upcoming "Veteran Matters" series. On Sunday, April 22, the first of the 10-part series will air on Saint Xavier's WXAV 88.3 FM and at WXAV.com at 9 a.m. Airing in two segments, the series will come on Sundays from April 22 through May 20 and during August through September later this year. Veteran Matters begins by introducing all the veteran interviewees, including some current Saint Xavier University students and faculty members, who will share their stories in subsequent programs.
