Marist High School teacher and alum Don Richardson ’77 is this year’s winner of the Champagnat Award, an honor given to faculty members who demonstrate the example set by St. Marcellin Champagnat in their teaching. Don will also be celebrating his 25 anniversary at Marist next year.

The perennially strong program will have a new leader next season.
The Redhawks are getting a new coach. Marist High School Principal Larry Tucker and Athletic Director Bob Lim announced on Wednesday that Julie Popp Hopkins will take over as the new Marist women’s varsity volleyball coach. Hopkins will also become a physical education instructor at the school. Hopkins will suceed longtime coach Natalie Holder who resigned at the end of last season. Hopkins already has a few titles on her resume. She taught and coached at The Latin School in Chicago where her teams won back to back league titles in 2011 and 2012. She was named conference coach of the year in 2012, the school said in a press release. Outside of school, Hopkins works as a club volleyball coach for the Michio Volleyball Club. Hopkins is a …

The Marist baseball team faced a tough challenge when it squared off against Marian Catholic ace Brett Lilek in a 4-1 setback on Monday afternoon. Lilek is considered one of the best junior pitcher's in the state. Couple that with the fact the RedHawks have struggled to get clutch hits, and one would think the task would prove too much to handle. But the harsh reality of the real world hit the RedHawk program early Friday morning when players learned one of their classmate's--Paul Simmons Jr.--died after collapsing while playing basketball during a senior lock-in at the Southside school. “I can’t speak for the kids on how they feel, but I know their playing with heavy hearts,” RedHawks coach Tom Fabrizio said. The Redhawks begin defense of their state championship with a hard-fought win over the host Celtics.
Marist opened its 2011 boys volleyball season with a mission of defending its state championship. The Redhawks took a first step with a victory over Providence Catholic on Tuesday night in New Lenox, but it was anything but easy. Marist won the first game 25-21, Providence took the second game 25-23, and the Redhawks captured the match with a 25-18 victory in Game 3. Senior middle blocker Jim Mead led the Redhawks with nine kills and 13 blocks. His kill late in the third game gave the Redhawks a 23-16 lead. "We've been practicing a lot," Mead said. "Me and my setter (Sean Connelly) have good chemistry together." Marist took a 7-4 lead in the first game, but the Celtics (0-1) fought back to tie the game at 20-20 before the Redhawks surged …
