Hey Mom and Dad: How Do You Keep Kids Motivated for the School Year Home Stretch?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Of all the great destroyers of report cards, perhaps none is more feared than the dastardly Spring Fever. Well, okay, many others are worse, but spring fever can be pretty bad, too. Everyone can well remember from their own childhoods: when it's getting warm outside and summer vacation is in sight, sometimes it's just a little bit trickier to remember quadratic formulae and first-declension nominative plural endings for Latin nouns like "formula." Which brings us to this week's Hey Mom & Dad question: Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the comments section. Mary Hartman: My speech to my son goes something like this: I better see As/Bs otherwise it's going to be a really sad summer for you! —on Tinley Park …

Hey Mom and Dad: What Curfews Do You Set for Your Teens?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Welcome to "Hey Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area. Most teens love to stay out late with their friends, a habit upon which many parents prefer to keep a certain degree of limitations. Mom and Dad tend to know better about when their kids need to get some sleep, after all—and when there's liable to be less reason to be out. Which brings us to this week's question: What curfews have you set for your teenage children, and how do you enforce them? Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the …

Hey Mom and Dad: What's the Best Approach for Raising Kids?

Hands on or hands off?

Welcome to "Hey, Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area. The other allows the children to make mistakes and sometimes get hurt in the process.  Here's what a few of our …

Great question and discussion. I feel parents need to change their approach according to the demands and the situation but there's no harm letting them fall once in a while if you feel it will serve as an important lesson for them provided it doesn't have adverse consequences. Let children be on their own but parents should be their guiding angel. I wrote a post on the parenting styles http://www…   more ›

Hey, Mom and Dad: Is It OK to Ask Your Kids to Grab You a Beer?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking. This week we're wondering: Is it wrong to ask your youngster to grab you a brewski?

Welcome to "Hey, Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. We're starting off with a question we posed last week on the Patch Facebook pages: After a long day, the head honcho in your household is exhausted and wants to kick back with a cold one. But should a kid be the one to hand it off?   Take a look at what people had to say and join the conversation in the Comments section. Jennifer Valdez: Fetch a beer NO. ... Go make mommy her favorite martini YES —Palos Patch Facebook Michel Kiwi-Popyk: I say yes. it's a rule for me. no kid gets alcohol around here. the crazy thing is i remember "making" drinks for my dad. but just can't do it in today's age. —Homewood-Flossmoor Patch …
