Athlete of the Month: Marist Wide Receiver Courageous After Death of Brother

Marist junior football wide receiver Nic Weishar inspired his teammates and coaches with his performance against Benet Academy. His older brother pushed him to new heights before losing his battle to cancer.

Nic Weishar watched his older brother muster all of his strength and summon all of  his courage during his battle with cancer. He showed the same kind of strength and courage when he put on his uniform and played in Marist’s football game against Benet Academy less than 24 hours after his death. “I thought about it with my family,” Weishar said. “I knew my brother would definitely want me to play. I think he’d get pretty mad at me if I didn’t play. He was my biggest fan—and also my biggest critic, I’d say. “When I’d come home from games, he was always telling me what I did wrong and what to improve on as well. Andrew Bowler Powell's Quest for Perfection Ends With a Title: January Athlete of the Month

Andrew bowling standout Josh Powell bowled one 300 game in practice and another in the match. Then, the led the T-Bolts to their third IHSA state championship in the last eight years. He is recognized today at Patch's Athlete of the Month for January.

When Andrew’s Josh Powell rolled a 300 game in a match against Lincoln-Way West, he thought he had scaled to the top of the high school bowling mountain. Soon, he found out he had a couple more steps to take on the journey toward his perfect season. Powell, Patch’s Athlete of the Month for January, climbed those steps in the IHSA boys bowling state tournament at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon. He averaged 225.3 for 12 games, placed fourth individually and led the Thunderbolts to their third state championship in the last eight years. “Shooting a 300 game in a match is fun,” Powell said. “It feels good to know that you can repeat shots over and over again. Providence's Klimara Pins Down December Athlete of Month Honors

Providence Catholic senior wrestling standout Eddie Klimara became the second individual to win four straight championships in the storied Al Dvorak Memorial Tournament Dec. 22-23 and is honored today as Patch's Athlete of the Month for December.

A information sheet was distributed at his school. A buddy said, “Sure, let’s do it.”  And Eddie Klimara’s excellent wrestling adventure was hatched. Klimara, a Providence Catholic High School senior, first was fitted in a singlet in first grade. Back then, he didn’t know the difference between ordinary sneakers and wrestling shoes. Today, he is treading on the brink of an historic achievement. Klimara is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A at 126 pounds by Illinois Matmen and boasts a 26-1 record heading into the Geneseo Invitational. He is bidding for his fourth straight appearance in the IHSA state finals and his second IHSA state championship. And he is right on track to fulfill all of his goals.
