Neighboring Nurses Volley in a Friendly Crosstown Competition for Charity

Nurses from neighboring Endoscopic laboratories take to the sand to claim victory in a case of friendly 95th Street rivalry.

While praising the work of nurses at the different Endoscopic teams of Evergreen Park’s Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers and Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, little did Dr. Michael D’Astice know he’d set off a case of friendly 95th Street rivalry. “Since many Gastroenterology specialists work at both hospitals, naturally, they often compared the routines of the different teams. After a while, the nurses grew tired of the comparison,” said D’Astice, Medical Director of the Endoscopy Center at Little Company of Mary. The Endoscopy nurses at Advocate Christ Medical Center took matters in their own hands, and threw down the gauntlet--Team GI vs Little Company of Mary's Bombers--to determine the better team …

Sports Photo Gallery: Grizzlies Growl Into Dark of the Night

After leading by as much as 7-0 and 9-2, the Oak Lawn Grizzlies had to hold on to top the Berwyn Thunder in an 11-under baseball shootout that was stopped short by darkness.

In a Northern Illinois Metro League 11-under baseball game that was shortened because of darkness, the Oak Lawn Grizzlies outlasted the Berwyn Thunder 15-11 at St. Xavier University.  Frankie Alvarado pitched two scoreless innings to start the game and also went 3-for-4 with one run scored and two RBIs. Ben Lynch went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Lynch's RBI double in the first opened the scoring for Oak Lawn. The Grizzlies built leads of 7-0 and 9-2, but three different relief pitchers combined to issue 10 walks, and Berwyn rallied to tie it at 9-9 in the top of the sixth. Oak Lawn answered back with six runs in the bottom of the sixth, and the game was called with two outs in the top of the seventh due to darkness. Local Mosque Leader Hopes bin Laden's Death Brings Peace to Muslims and the World

Osama bin Laden's murderous actions heightened fear and suspicion of all Muslims. A Bridgeview Mosque leader hopes for better days ahead.

Days after 9-11, a patriotism rally in Oak Lawn turned ugly and an anti-Arab mob marched through the streets toward the Bridgeview mosque. Almost a full 10 years later, as the president announced that the mastermind behind the 9-11 attacks had been shot to death by U.S. Navy Seals, a celebratory crowd gathered outside the White House. As word spread, fireworks could be heard at homes around the south suburbs. Meanwhile, the folks at the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview found reason to be relieved, even reason to hope. "After 10 years of sadness, fear and uncertainty, we have been under extreme pressure," said Oussama Jammal, vice president of the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview, explaining the feelings that have pervaded the American Muslim…
