No Injuries Reported in 95th Street Car Fire

After a man's car caught on fire just outside of a parking lot on 95th Street, he escaped safely.

According to Oak Lawn Police, a car caught on fire Monday afternoon just outside of a parking lot on 95th Street. No injuries were reported. At about 2:30 p.m., Kelvin Pickens was about to turn east to exit the Home Depot parking lot at 4060 W. 95th St. and his 1993 Dodge Dakota caught fire. "It might have sprung a leak and ignited," the Homewood resident said, then he saw smoke coming from his hood and got out of his car to call 9-1-1. "I didn't want to let the hood up because the wind would spread the flames," Pickens said. After calling local authorities, Pickens said the fire department assisted immediately and watered down the blaze. His car had total damage, he said. Pickens was the only person in the truck and sustained no injuries …

Army Ranger Wounded in Battle Shows Courage on Long Road To Recovery

Local soldier Sgt. Brad Hojek, with ties to Evergreen Park and Oak Lawn, reunites with family and friends after a devastating deployment to Afghanistan. With hopes of his speedy recovery, a fundraiser is being thrown in his honor.

Service men and women all over the nation give their lives daily to protect the freedom of Americans everywhere. It is a tremendous responsibility that is commendable and full of honor, but can also come with a tremendous price. Sgt. Brad Hojek Jr., 23, a U.S. Army Ranger, paid that price in March, when he was injured during a remote mission in Afghanistan with his unit. Hojek was shot several times and sustained severe injuries to his pelvis, left leg and both of his hips. After being attended to by medics in Afghanistan, Hojek was transported to a military hospital in Texas, and most recently has settled in at Fort Benning in Columbus, GA, where he continues his rehabilitative treatment. This Thursday, Hojek is coming home for a hero’s …

A Sad Goodbye to a Fallen Chicago Firefighter

Oak Lawn firefighters and residents line 103rd Street to pay respects to the firefighter who died in the aftermath of a South Side blaze.

Chicago firefighters stood at attention outside an Oak Lawn funeral home Tuesday morning as the casket bearing the body of Edward Stringer was carried outside and placed gently on floral wreathed firetruck. Stringer and colleague Corey Ankum were killed in the line of duty on Dec. 22 when a wall collapsed in a vacant building after they had gone inside to look for possible homeless victims following an extra-alarm fire. Since Monday afternoon, hundreds of firefighters, family members and friends paid their respects to Stringer at the Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 W. 103rd St. Firefighters saluted Stringer's casket as it was loaded onto a Chicago firetruck with the firefighter's helmet and jacket strapped to truck's front grill.
