Mariano's expected to jobs, tax revenue and more upscale stores to redevelopment project that was "long in coming" to Oak Lawn, mayor says.
Build it and they will come. That’s what the Village of Oak Lawn is banking on with the signing of Mariano’s Fresh Market at 111th Street and Cicero Avenue. Mayor Dave Heilmann officially confirmed the lease agreement with the upscale grocer at Tuesday’s village board meeting after news of the deal was leaked earlier in the day by Patch. “One of the most important parts of getting someone like Mariano’s who has sales that are that strong is that it draws other people to the site,” Heilmann said. “If you’re getting a Mariano’s you’re doing very well.” Mariano's Fresh Market is owned by Milwaukee-based Roundy's Supermarkets and has several locations in the Chicago-area helmed by former Dominck’s CEO Bob Mariano. A Marino’s Fresh Market is …

Former colleagues, scouts and youth baseball league players recount the missed cues of the Boy Scouts' most prolific serial pedophile.
Among the many red flags that stood out about convicted child sex predator Thomas Hacker were the shorts he wore coaching games and running the concession stand at Westside Baseball in the early 1980s. Connect with Patch: Oak Lawn / Beverly-Mt. Greenwood / Evergreen Park He liked to wear them pulled high over his waist so that they barely covered his thighs, recalled Bill Olsen, who was 12 years old when he played for Hacker on the Westside's all-star team, circa 1980. “I found him odd, just the way he presented himself,” Olsen said. “Just hearing the name gives me chills. Even talking about it right now I get a little angry.” Hacker was convicted in 1989 on multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault against three Boy Scouts, ages 11 and…

Thomas Hacker had a hot temper and physically abused students when he taught at School 57 in Indianapolis. He threw a girl across the classroom during class because she didn't hear his instructions on the new seat assignments. He beat boys in the hallway outside his classroom and this was called discipline. The teaching staff and administrators sent problem students to him for discipline. …   more ›

Oak Lawn police want to know how a 51-year-old man came to receive severe head injuries after he was found slumped on his front doorstep where he had apparently been lying unconscious all night. The man’s family—who say their loved one is fighting for his life at Advocate Christ Medical Center under the name “John Doe—thinks he was intentionally beaten. Police have opened an investigation. The saga began on Tuesday, Jan. 29, when an older brother picked up John Doe at his home in the 10900 block of South Komensky Ave. for an evening of pool at the Town Lounge in Hometown. Local food pantry staff say that their shelves have grown bare as demand continues to rise.
The holidays are always a busy time for local food pantries and this year has been particularly demanding. Those who run local food pantries say the number of area families in need has risen sharply over the last several years and every donation helps as they look to supply holiday provisions. With that in mind, Shirey Cadillac in Oak Lawn offered customers and employees a chance to give back to their community this holiday season. The dealership donated hundreds of items to the Village Pantry Coalition in Evergreen Park and Pilgrim Faith United Church of Christ in Oak Lawn. Jolene Churak, president of the Village Pantry Coalition, says that the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a time when the food supply can dip. Local …

St. Linus Catholic School and Brother Rice High School graduate David Diehl protects Giants quarterback Eli Manning through his work on the offensive line.
INDIANAPOLIS–Brother Rice High School graduate David Diehl has been in this situation before—on the grandest sporting stage with the New York Giants, playing against their northern rivals, the New England Patriots. But make no mistake about it, for Diehl and his teammates this is a new game, in a new city and the past means nothing in Super Bowl XLVI. “It pays no dividends in what happens this weekend in Super Bowl XLVI,” he said this week. “This isn’t Super Bowl XLII. I think you are looking at two completely different football teams that are going out there and competing, so we are approaching this one as hard as we can and with the intensity that we are going to do whatever we have to do this week to make sure we go into this game and …
