Wagner Keeps Moraine Board Seat; Cunningham Wins 2-Year Term (UPDATED)

With 286 of 286 precincts reporting, Tom Cunningham grabs the 2-year seat while Eileen O'Sullivan and Sandra Wagner win full-term seats on the Moraine Valley board, according to unofficial results. A third full-term seat was too close to call Tuesday.

Editor's Note: The vote difference between two candidates vying for the third full-term seat was updated below. Joseph Murphy and John Brosnan Donahue are now separated by 13 votes. At least one incumbent will keep her seat on the Moraine Valley Board of Trustees. With 281 of 286 precincts reporting, Eileen O'Sullivan, Sandra Wagner and Tom Cunningham were elected Tuesday night to the Moraine Valley Board of Trustees, according to unofficial results. Leona’s restaurant closed over the weekend at 6616 W. 95th St. in Oak Lawn. The move was part of the 63-year-old chain’s retooling that includes shutting down its Hop Haus gastropub, moving a city location, closing two of its suburban locations and selling its headquarters and production facility at 3931 S. Leavitt St. in Chicago. Chicago Real Estate Daily reported that northwest Indiana-based Texas Corral Grill & Saloon had signed a lease for the Oak Lawn building, but a manager at the steakhouse’s Highland, Ind., location refused to comment and referred calls to the corporate office, which were not returned. Moraine Valley President To Retire

Vernon O. Crawley, the president of Moraine Valley Community College, will step down after 21 years.

The longest serving college executive in Illinois will be leaving his post, it was announced this week. After 21 years Dr. Vernon O. Crawley, president of Moraine Valley Community College, will retire on June 30. During his tenure Moraine Valley has expanded both its student body and campus. "I am proud of the accomplishments over the past 21 years that were due in large measure to your dedication and support,” he said in an announcement to the community. “My 21-year journey has been exciting, challenging and rewarding. Thank you for making my time at Moraine Valley a memorable experience.” The college will soon begin the process of finding a replacement. “We tried and were successful in delaying his retirement for several years, and we …

Illinois Lieutenant Governor to Visit Moraine Valley Community College

At Monday's board of education meeting, MVCC trustees were told that the college's expansion and improvement projects are coming to an end.

As part of her goal to visit every community college campus in the state, Illinois Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon is scheduled to tour Moraine Valley Community College and meet with students and staff on Sept. 21. The visit to Moraine Valley is part of a larger effort by the governor's office to hear the academic, enrollment and financial concerns of each of the state’s 48 community colleges and help spotlight the role they play in increasing the state’s college completion rate. According to her website, Simon wants 60 percent of working-age adults to hold meaningful college degrees or certificates by 2025, up from about 40 percent today.
