A look at the sea of pink and green that descended on Longwood Drive to raise funds for local breast cancer causes.
It's hard to think of Mother's Day without remembering the Beverly Breast Cancer Walk. Now in it's 14th year, the event has raised millions of dollars for local cancer causes. This year over 12,000 walkers banded together to raise more than $500,000, according to event organizers. The funds stay in the community and help support Little Company of Mary Hospital's Cancer Center. This year's top fund raising team was the Oak Lawn Raiders, who raised over $15,000. The route took walkers through the historic Beverly neighborhood where local musicians provided the soundtrack for the early morning walk.

The hospital moved 75 patients into new private rooms. Scroll through our photo gallery to get a look inside the new digs.
Starting bright and early Wednesday morning 75 patients were moved floor-by-floor into new rooms as Little Company of Mary Hospital officially opened its new West Pavilion. The 300,000 square-foot addition, the hospital's largest ever, includes 118 private rooms designed to welcome family and visitors while providing a warm and comforting atmosphere. Janet Staib was one of the patients moved into the new rooms Wednesday morning. The former Mount Greenwood resident is undergoing cancer treatments and is a devoted patient of the hospital. "It went beautifully," Staib said. "Everything is private and it makes it much more relaxing. I think it helps you get well quicker." Staib, whose three grown children were all born at the hospital, says…

By the nature of its side effects, cancer treatment can make a private battle a very public affair. For a woman with cancer, having a bald head, pale skin or a missing breast can make her feel like she's being targeted by a bright spotlight and a banner that says, "Cancer patient." But now more than ever, there are resources that will put the spotlight back on their work, their accomplishments and their life—and change that banner to simply read, "Woman." The Cancer Support Center has wig boutiques at its offices at 2028 Elm Road in Homewood and 19250 Everett Lane in Mokena. "Patients involved with any of our programs can come in to the Wendy Lark wig boutique in Homewood or the Hometown Hoedown wig boutique in Mokena and be fitted with a …

Work has finally started on the Planet Fitness center at 9503 S. Cicero Ave. in the Green Oak Shopping Center in the former Oak Lawn Fresh Market space. “They started working on it a few weeks ago, and workers are in there every day now,” said Steve Kant, vice president of Robin Realty, the company that owns and manages the mall. Kant said he didn’t know when the 17,400-square-foot fitness center would be opening. An email to the marketing department at Planet Fitness was not answered. Planet Fitness operates more than 500 fitness centers in 46 states and the vast majority of them are franchised operations. The chain, which prides itself for being a Judgment Free Zone and holds monthly pizza nights and gives away Tootsie Rolls to clients, …

The Evergreen Parker considers new hospital buildings in Evergreen Park and Oak Lawn and ponders healing as it relates to construction.
New hospital buildings are rising in Evergreen Park and Oak Lawn. Soon we will be bookended by shiny new wings at Little Company of Mary here in our village and Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The latest medical technology and hospital construction advances will be within easy reach. And yet lately I find myself wondering what do these new buildings have to do with healing? Earlier this year, my father had a stroke and spent a week in the hospital near the home he shares with my mom outside Portland, Oregon. The stroke was the latest—and thankfully to-date the last—in a series of medical problems he and my mom faced over the past two years. There were many trips to the hospital, twice in ambulances. Now, the hospital by my …

A water color painting course offered by the Integrative Therapy Program at Little Company of Mary is changing cancer patients' lives one brush stroke at a time.
Holistic healthcare is a term that may still have people asking, “What is it? Where might one go to receive this form of support and treatment? How can it be achieved?” And more importantly, “What does it mean for someone living with or recently diagnosed with cancer?" These are just a few of the many questions various cancer patients may ask while coping with their life-changing diagnosis. This theorem seeks to address and treat a patient’s mind, body and spirit, claiming that it will encourage measurable strides against the disease, with hopes that it will extend the quality of life for cancer patients. With this in mind, Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Canters’ Cancer Resource Center fashioned a fully functioning …

Police say a woman couldn't get her story—or her name—straight when she was attempting to receive hospital care.
Police said a woman tried to use someone else’s health care benefits at Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers. According to police reports, Dejanee Koonce, 22, of Chicago, was charged with health care benefits fraud for attempting to receive health care benefits from Little Company of Mary, 2800 W. 95th St., by providing false insurance information. Police said she provided the name of a cousin, knowing that the cousin has public aid insurance. The hospital called police because Koonce used insurance information and signed forms with a different name than she printed on the form, police said. The hospital clerk said Koonce had no form of identification and gave an excuse that she wasn't paying attention when she signed …
