Marist junior football wide receiver Nic Weishar inspired his teammates and coaches with his performance against Benet Academy. His older brother pushed him to new heights before losing his battle to cancer.
Nic Weishar watched his older brother muster all of his strength and summon all of his courage during his battle with cancer. He showed the same kind of strength and courage when he put on his uniform and played in Marist’s football game against Benet Academy less than 24 hours after his death. “I thought about it with my family,” Weishar said. “I knew my brother would definitely want me to play. I think he’d get pretty mad at me if I didn’t play. He was my biggest fan—and also my biggest critic, I’d say. “When I’d come home from games, he was always telling me what I did wrong and what to improve on as well. Yeah, he was looking out for me.” Andrew Weishar, 21, died of colorectal cancer at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 12. He was a two…

Lela Vance-Glover was among seven cancer survivors celebrated at the Relay for Life, Evergreen Park, Mt. Greenwood and Beverly this month. They all received medals from Medals4Mettle for their courage in beating cancer.
Like many diagnosed with cancer, 50-year-old south suburban resident Lela Vance-Glover’s journey through the disease began with a routine physical exam, “which I delayed so many times,” she said. At 48 years old, she felt she was in great health, but ignored a few minor signs that would prove otherwise. Almost two years ago, Vance-Glover’s new general practitioner found a lump that was later diagnosed as cancer. “When I received the positive diagnosis of breast cancer from a surgeon an hour or so after the biopsy, I knew at that moment that I had to face this fear with dignity and courage. I just knew right away that I needed to confront this pending chaos head-on and follow the given treatment plan to the very letter,” said Vance-Glover. …

This year for their annual Vacation Bible School mission project, Most Holy Redeemer Parish chose to raise money to buy a family in Haiti a goat. Help them reach their $150 goal.
After Arlene Astrowski's son returned home from a Haiti mission trip and a USA Weekend article about donating to relief efforts after the 2010 earthquake came across her desk, she knew she had to be involved. The Tinley Park resident has worked as director of religious education for Most Holy Redeemer Parish in Evergreen Park for 18 years. This year marks the 10th year the church has participated in Vacation Bible School, and to add more meaning, Astrowski attaches a special mission project. For the 2012 project, the parish will raise $150 to sponsor a goat for a family living in Haiti through Norwich, Conn.-based Haitian Health Foundation. "My son got home from his mission trip and described the devastation. At the same time, I saw the …

Evergreen Park High School senior Neil Steen has come to be admired for his volunteer work at the Ronald McDonald House. He rates as an 'A' in the classroom and on the playing fields, too.
At Evergreen Park High School, it is a commonly known fact. There is no stopping The Steen Machine. Nor will Neil Steen soon be forgotten when he charges from the Mustang corral. He has touched so many lives in so many ways since first walking into the picture as a virtual unknown four years ago. Today, Steen is an honor roll student, local football hero and Wendy’s High School Heisman school rep. And that’s only a part of his tall tale. (Steen stands 6-2). He also has come to be known as the Big Kid in the play room at the Ronald McDonald House at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The baldy who works to raise funds for cancer research. And the good neighbor and Samaritan who lends a hand to a widowed neighbor when the telephone rings. “…
