The council also approved business licenses for Culver's and a new Michaels craft store.
In a council chamber where an FDNY memento sits as a tribute to the heroism of firefighters, Mayor Jim Sexton on Monday night led a standing ovation for the men and women of the Evergreen Park Fire Department. “These fine folks deserve a big round of applause for the job they do every day,” Sexton said. “Every night, when the rest of us lay our heads down to sleep, they’re out there protecting us.” Sexton directed his praise at several dozen EPFD rank and file members who stood at the back of council chambers, as well as at Chief Ronald Kleinhaus and Deputy Chief Corey Hojek, who were there to present the department’s annual report. Sexton noted that while the department fielded nearly 2,700 calls for service in 2012, the village saw just…

Firefighters put out a fire that left three floors collapsed Saturday afternoon and dozens homeless.
No injuries have been reported in a fire that left the interior of a 32-unit Morgan Park condo building partially collapsed. The fire broke out around 2:20 p.m. at 2030 W. 111th Street, according to Chicago Fire Department officials. Chicago Deputy Fire Commissioner John McNicholas said the 3-11 alarm fire has so far caused minor injuries to four people who were treated at the scene but declined to go to the hospital. Roddric Sims lives on the third floor of the building and was home with his son Ryan, 7, when the fire broke out. "The alarm went off, someone was outside yelling 'Fire!'," Sims said. "I walked out of my son's room and saw black smoke coming out of the vent." Sims then picked up his son and ran to the end of the hallway …

The village's fire prevention initiative asks residents to follow these tips to keep local homes safe this holiday season.
As many residents in the village put the finishing touches on their holiday decorations for the season, the Evergreen Park Fire Department, would like to remind them what they can do to have a fire free holiday. In conjunction with other fire departments across the state, the Evergreen Park Fire Department is participating in the “Keep the Wreath Red” fire safety campaign. The holiday wreath displayed at the fire station is decorated with a string of red light bulbs. In the event of a fire caused by holiday decorations, one red bulb will be replaced with a white bulb. The Illinois Fire Chiefs Association adopted the program in 1980 as a way to promote fire safety during the holiday season. "We are urging all residents to help 'Keep the …

Thanks to a federal grant, new computer software will keep track of Evergreen Park firefighters like never before.
With over 100 firefighters working for the Evergreen Park Fire Department, it can be difficult to keep track of who's on the scene. That's where technology comes in. After receiving a $147,000 grant through the Department of Homeland Security, the EPFD bought 29 radios, two Toughbook computers and computer software to run a state-of-the-art accountability system, said Fire Chief Ronald Kleinhaus. At the last Village Board meeting, trustees unanimously approved the purchase, which will cost the village $15,716.13, 10 percent of the total cost. The grant assumes the remaining 90 percent. Once the firefighters switch on their radios, the department can monitor who's on the scene until the firefighters get back to the fire house. “We've been …

The village's fire prevention initiative asks residents to follow these tips to keep local homes safe this holiday season.
Red is everywhere this time of year — from Santa's jolly suit to the stripes in a child's sticky candy cane. For most people, red represents a traditional color of the Christmas season. But for the Evergreen Park Fire Department, red also stands for a fire-free holiday season. Fires during the holiday season claim more than 400 lives, injure 2,200 others, and cause more than $990 million in damage each year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. Those are statistics the Evergreen Park Fire Department hopes to help lower by joining with fire departments statewide in the annual "Keep the Wreath Red" holiday fire prevention initiative. The Illinois Fire Chiefs Association adopted the program in 1980 as a way to promote fire safety …

Why don't you have a full time fire department with benefits and a union? Seems disrespectful to me to have a full time police department but 95% of your fire department is part time. They do a great job for your community but they could do a better job for themslves and their families if they were full time. Take care of them.   more ›
