Do you think it should be mandatory for Jewel-Osco employees to follow you — and your cart — out to your vehicle? Let us know in the comments section.
Area residents voiced strong opinions this week on a new policy at Jewel-Osco, which requires its employees to follow customers — and their carts — out to their vehicles. The service is mandatory, according to couponsinthenews.com, and whether you want the help or not, your bagger is expected to follow you out to your vehicle. The service has nothing to do with keeping track of carts, according to Coupons in the News. "We understand that this is a very different service and it might take our customers some time to understand that we want this to be the norm," said a Jewel customer service representative in the article. Local Patch readers sounded off on the new policy on the Beverly-Mt. Greenwood, Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park Facebook …

Two men were found unfit to face criminal charges this week.
Not one, but two men were found unfit to face criminal charges this week. For the second time in a month, Mark Lewis, 53, was deemed unfit to stand trial for the murder of his sister, who was found beaten to death in her Naperville home in June 2011. Lewis wants to act as his own attorney if the murder case ever makes it to trial. Also wanting to act as his own attorney—and deemed unfit to face criminal charges—was 40-year-old Jason Chance of downstate Lewiston. Chance already did prison time for menacing Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow through Facebook. According to a criminal complaint, Chance threatened to rape and kill the county's top prosecutor. After his release, Chance allegedly made harassing telephone calls to a judge…

Bailey, a large Sheltie that looks like a collie, has been missing from Evergreen Park since Wednesday, Nov. 21.
Nick Parker, a mail carrier from Evergreen Park, is looking for his dog, Bailey, whose been missing since Nov. 21, the day before Thanksgiving. Nick was working some overtime when his mom called to say that Bailey had slipped out of his collar and took off near 101st Street and Homan Avenue around 3 p.m. Wednesday. “I came home 15 minutes after it happened and drove around looking,” Nick said. “He has a lot of anxiety around strangers. He’s very skittish around people.” On Thanksgiving Day—Thursday—a neighbor reported seeing Bailey by 99th Street and Central Park near AJ Meats. “I was at my mom’s,” Nick said. One of the neighbors called and said Bailey found his way home. I ran back over here and just combed the neighborhood.” There have …

You see a lot of pink on the football field for Breast Cancer Awareness month. But not on the boys who play youth football in Mokena. A clueless call? Or overreaction?
The boys who play tackle football for the Mokena Burros can no longer garb themselves in shades of pink if they want to remain on the gridiron. So says Burros Athletic Director Sal Della Fave. In an e-mail at the onset of Breast Cancer Awareness Month to his players and coaches, Della Fave laid down the law: Only small, pink stickers can be affixed to helmets. "This is the only approved addition to our uniform," he wrote. "No other pink item is to be added to the uniform ie. socks, laces, duct tape etc. I am holding each of you accountable to ensure compliance." Patch's story about the decision and the ensuing displeasure felt by moms prompted much conversation among Patch's south suburban Facebook fans and followers of Patch sites. Here'…

I spent 4 hours last weekend in front of Jewel-Osco tagging for Saint Vincent de Paul. Here are my observations on this topic: Jewel-Osco still employs someone to return the carts from the parking lot to the store. Both of the young men I met who do this job are hardworking, helpful and pleasant. I saw very few shoppers being escorted or followed to their cars by employees. The customers who used…   more ›
