Tinley Park Native Olympic swimmer and silver medalist Christine Magnuson, 26, will compete next week in time trials that could qualify her for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. She's this week's Headliner.
Christine Magnuson is embarking on a life-changing experience this week--for the second time. She's vying for a space on the 2012 U.S. Summer Olympic swimming team. The 26-year-old medalist will be competing at time trials in Omaha, Ne., on Monday, June 25 with the full support of her family, friends and hometown, Tinley Park. "It's kind of one of those weird things," said Magnuson, who earned two silver medals in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China—one in the 100-meter butterfly and one in the four-by-100 meter medley. "I'm sure I'll be a little bit nervous when I get there. Obviously, you hope for the best." Congratulations to Adrienne Seiber, who's a trained boxer at the Academy of Self Defense in Evergreen Park! She won the "School of Hard Knocks" boxing match this weekend in Canada. Seiber's this week's Evergreen Park Headliner.
Adrienne Seiber is a force to be reckoned with. On Friday, she completed a feat that you don't see many moms do. Seiber, 40, brought home a 3-round victory against Charmaine Tweet, the Canadian Muay Thai Boxing champ and tough Mixed Martial Arts competitor. Seiber is one of Chicago’s finest who’s professionally trained under Jeff Waldrom at the Academy of Self Defense in Evergreen Park. At the event, she had "relentless take-downs, position control and 'ground and pound' for 15 minutes," according to the Academy's Facebook page. "Excellent execution of the game plan!" “I am competitive by nature,” Seiber says. “I like to push myself with anything (I do)." Evergreen Park Community High School graduating senior and track standout Chris Cheatham brought home the silver medal finishing second in the 300 hurdles at the Class 2A state meet He's this week's Evergreen Park Headliner.
Chris Cheatham cleared his final hurdle last week as the first Evergreen Park Community High School Mustang to win a boys state-meet track and field medal since 2002. "This year, Chris (Cheatham) achieved what every track athlete strives for," Evergreen Park boys track and field coach Ray Mankowski said in a news release following Cheatham's run to a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles at the Class 2A state meet. Clocked in 38.79 seconds, Cheatham returned home from Charleston with a silver medal hanging around his neck and the admiration of Evergreen Park coaches, teammates and fans filling his heart. Evergreen Park Resident Michael Murphy rappelled 27 stories in memory of his mother at the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago's Skyline Plunge on Sunday, May 6.
As a thrill-seeking risk-taker who truely loves his mother, Michael Murphy recently completed a goal to honor her and raise awareness for patients with the condition that took her life away. On May 9, Murphy rappelled down the Wit Hotel in Chicago, plunging 278 feet above State and Lake Streets as part of Skyline Plunge! Murphy's mother, Maureen, passed away from lung disease in August of 2008. The event was hosted by the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago to raise awareness and more than $100,000 for lung disease research and programs. As director of religious education for Most Holy Redeemer Parish in Evergreen Park, Arlene Astrowski said this year's Vacation Bible School mission project would raise $150 to sponsor a goat for a family living in Haiti.
When Most Holy Redeemer Parish's director of religious education Arlene Astrowski was researching mission projects for this year's Vacation Bible School participants, one effort pulled on her heartstrings. Her son, a Lutheran minister, went to Haiti to aid after an earthquake struck the area in 2010. After he returned home, a USA Weekend article about donating to relief efforts came across her desk. She took that as a divine sign that she should be involved. "My son got home from his mission trip and described the devastation. At the same time, I saw the article," said Astrowski.
