Village hoping for a May opening. Dog park is slated next for completion at new 50-acre park, officials say.
Duffers will have a new spot to chip golf balls this summer with the completion of the driving range at the new 50-acre park that is currently under construction at 91st Street and California Avenue. Sign up for the Evergreen Park newsletter and follow us on Facebook. Bill Lorenz, public works director for Evergreen Park, told village board members at their meeting on Monday that he’s shooting for an opening in the next month, pending weather. The park is being built on a piece of the former Evergreen Country Club property. “The driving range will be open by May,” Lorenz said. “We’re still in winter here. I’m still trying to shoot for an end-of-April opening.” Lorenz said equipment for the driving range has been ordered and the range is …
More than 150 residents and neighbors showed up at Monday’s Village Board meeting to voice concerns about the new outdoor mall development which was approved to begin construction on the former Evergreen Country Club property.
The room capacity was nearly breached at Monday’s Village Board meeting, when several residents and neighbors showed up to oppose the already-approved outdoor mall development on the property of the former Evergreen Country Club. In June, Trustees unanimously approved plans to build the shopping center, which will be anchored by a 200,000-square-foot Menards and a 157,000-square-foot Meijer. The village purchased the other section of the former golf course through a state grant and will preserve it for recreational green space. Plans include a sledding hill, dog park, dog wading pools, agricultural area, putting area and a gazebo. Many of the concerns expressed by the audience, which included residents of Evergreen Park and neighbors from …

Protestors with the nearby Beverly Improvement Association said the new mall development will negatively impact the environment.
Sunday, dozens of people rallied to protest a new shopping center development that will be built upon the property of the former Evergreen Country Club and anchored by a Meijer and Menard's.
The Beverly Improvement Association, said that it expects push-back on the development that will bring an outdoor mall anchored by a Meijer and Menard's on the former Evergreen Country Club property.
Three months after trustees approved the construction of an outdoor mall on the property of the former Evergreen Country Club, neighbors are taking action against the new plans. The SouthtownStar reported Tuesday that Benjamin Cox, a board member of the Beverly Improvement Association, said opponents plan to fight the development that will bring a Menards, a Meijer store and others to the site. The organization is circulating a petition and starting a letter-writing drive, "A petition for the local politicians and the letters for Meijer and Menards," said Cox Tuesday. In June, trustees approved the development, that Mayor James Sexton said is expected to bring much-needed jobs and revenue to the village. Chicago-based Sterling Bay Cos. …

While it is sad to have "green" areas developed, the economy just isn't allowing us to keep those areas. Regardless, the Beverly Improvement Association should really mind their own business. They are not paying our taxes or living in Evergreen Park.   more ›
After the Village Board unanimously approved development of a 450,000-square-foot outdoor mall project, we dig a little deeper into the subtext of what that could mean for Evergreen Park.
Dozens of people from Evergreen Park and Chicago's Beverly neighborhood have turned out at public meetings the past two weeks to study and comment on plans for a proposed 450,000-square-foot strip mall on Western Avenue north of the Walmart/Sam's Club development. I have written about developments like this for many years, and the comments and concerns are almost always the same: traffic, especially in neighborhoods and around schools; storm water runoff; and the loss of green space. Many of the comments about this development touched on those themes. But there was also an undercurrent of dissatisfaction with the project that extended beyond them, a feeling that this development at this time in this place simply doesn't fit. People wanted …

Just what EP needs--another goldmine for the shoplifters and thieves who make Walmart, Sam's Club and the Plaza unshoppable for residents. Declining home values have resulted in a very different mix in the village, and the results are a shame. No increase in sales tax revenue is going to reverse the sad decline EP has experienced over the past ten years or so.   more ›
The Village Board approved Monday a new development, which will be anchored by a Meijer and Menards.
Trustees unanimously approved Monday night plans to build a shopping center on the former Evergreen Country Club property—a project which Mayor James Sexton characterized as “the largest retail development in the history of Evergreen Park." Developers said the 450,000-square-foot outdoor mall will be anchored by a 200,000-square-foot Menards and a 157,000-square-foot Meijer, as well as a Meijer gas station and convenience store on one of the outlots. Sexton said the project is expected to bring in about $4.5 million in property tax revenue and sales to the local school districts and the village. Chicago-based Sterling Bay Cos. purchased the property in November for $7.5 million from Anna May “Babe” Ahern, who died in December. Her family …

See the top news that's made headlines in Evergreen Park this year.
Although Evergreen Park Patch has only been live for close to a month, we have had our eyes on the community throughout the year. Here's our round-up of the top 10 stories to come out of Evergreen Park and affect its residents in 2010. After nearly 70 years in business, the Evergreen Park Golf & Country Club was sold, making way for a planned retail development. In November, Sterling Bay Cos. bought the Evergreen Park Golf & Country Club property from Anna May "Babe" Ahern, whose family had owned it since the 1920s. Ahern died Dec. 12. The 95-acre golf course and country club is bounded by 91st Street to the north, Western Ave. to the east, 93rd Place to the south and California Ave. to the west. The developers claim their project will be…

Up for sale or already sold, keep your eye on what's going on with these pieces of real estate in the new year.
The global recession has taken its toll on the real estate market over the past few years, and the village of Evergreen Park has not been exempt. Real estate agencies are grappling with homes in foreclosure, and both residential and commercial properties are selling below their values. Many companies that fell victim to the fluctuating economy were forced to close their business and sell their property. Given the tumultuous real estate environment in recent years, we've identified several developments to keep an eye on in the new year. Once the site of Webb Ford, owners of this vacant lot hope to sell soon. In late November, Marty Webb, a member of the family that owned the old Ford dealership, told Patch that the 6.5-acre site is under …

Just curious if anyone knows why this park is taking so long. Will it be three years if they don't finish until next spring? I could be wrong, but aren't parks FOR hanging out? And why such hatred for teenagers? I was one once. I didn't hurt anyone. I'm sure there will be plenty of police presence, as anywhere else in EP. I'm also curious how many Evergreen Parkers use Chicago and other suburbs. …   more ›
