Diversity Dinners: A Southland Tradition Continues

People of all kinds of colors, beliefs, ethnicities, lifestyles and ages from across Chicago’s south suburbs will gather to break bread at various dinner tables throughout the Southland on April 25. It’s part of the 16th annual Diversity Dinners—a Southland tradition where different types of people get together to embrace each other’s differences over a meal. “It promotes positive communication between people who might not otherwise have a chance to sit down and converse with one another,”  organizer Kimberly Richardson said. High Gas Prices Set March State Record

At just under $4 per gallon, there's no sign of price relief at the pump anytime soon.

The current state average of $3.92 per gallon of gas is the highest ever for March, the Chicago Tribune reports. That’s 59 cents more than compared to January prices, a mark of record acceleration, too. Oil refinery maintenance and a decline in production are responsible for the record-breaking prices, according to AAA Chicago spokesman Bill Mosher. Things won’t be getting better anytime soon, either. As the seasons change, refineries will be transitioning to (slightly) more environmentally friendly, but more expensive summer blends of gas. Shoveling Snow? Don't Have a Heart Attack

Advocate Christ Medical Center offers safety tips for snow removal.

Previously Published in 2011 The snow that’s falling on the Chicago region is the heavy, wet kind often described as “heart attack snow.” That’s because it takes more energy and exertion to get rid of than the light, fluffy stuff. “What people are really referring to are those have known or unknown heart disease when they stress their bodies shoveling snow,” Dr. Brian Sayger said, vice chairman of emergency room services for Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. “Basically, they’re doing a stress test on their heart,” Dr. Sayger said. “If someone has narrow arteries it can involve a lack of oxygen to the heart [possibly resulting] in a heart attack.” Dr. Sayger didn’t have exact statistics on heart attack snow-related incidents, but …
