Southland Faces at the White Sox Home Opener 2013

Take a look at images from U.S. Cellular Field as the Chicago White Sox kicked off the 2013 season, and see if you recognize a neighbor or two.

The smell of brats cooking on grills made its way through parking lot C off Shields Avenue. By 11 a.m. the beer was flowing. It was opening day on the southside.  Chicago White Sox baseball is deep in traditions for southside families. With a growing number of baby bears in the south suburbs, it wasn't hard to find Sox fans from the North side. "I've been a lifelong Sox fan," says Dan Kochevar from Glen Ellyn.   Brothers Tim and Dan Bergin from Chicago Heights hold a lifelong love for the Chicago White Sox.   "We have been coming to the park since 1967," said Tim Bergin. "Of course it was Old Comiskey across the street. We have had some great memories. Remembering the 2005 season when the team beat Boston in the division." Dan Bergin …

The Evergreen Parker

Sports Allegiances – Why Do We Keep Doing this to Ourselves?

With the Evergreen Park night at U.S. Cellular coming up in July the Evergreen Parker reflects on the teams he cheers for.

We just sent in our payment for four tickets to the White Sox-Minnesota Twins game on July 24. What's significant about that? It's the night the White Sox have set aside as "Village of Evergreen Park Grand Slam Group" night at U.S. Cellular Field. There are some pretty good deals on tickets to be had. If things keep going as they are for the Sox, I may actually be batting eighth and playing third base, in which case I hope the Sox refund my ticket price at least. Like many teams that do not win titles frequently—or, let's face it, even contend much of the time—the Sox are a difficult team to love. Most sports teams either lose their last game of the season, or win a meaningless last game. Only a handful go home winners. Which means most of…

I grew up in Oaklawn as a White Sox fan. I moved to Florida 30 yrs ago and am still a Sox fan as well as Bears, Bulls and Hawks. I can't tell you how many times I said I'm done with the Sox. But every year, I stil go to Tampa to see them play and get the baseball package on cable to see their games. When I come home to Chicago, it's always during baseball season to see the Sox play. I don't why …   more ›

Patch Weekly Sportscast: L-W North Baseball, Oak Forest's Sox Connection, Richards Football Line Coach & More

A look at some of the sports stories that made headlines during the past week in our South Chicago region.

Lincoln-Way North's ride to the Illinois Baseball Coaches Association summer state championship was a wild one. The title game was delayed by lightning. Then, the Phoenix brought some thunder from their bats in an 8-5 victory over Prairie Ridge. Oak Forest native Jason Frasor was dealt to the White Sox in a three-team trade that puts him in the thick of the Central Division race, not to mention in a spot that he calls home. Tony Pape played high school ball at Hinsdale South and went on to earn all-Big Ten football honors at Michigan. Later, he played professionally in Europe. Now, he's coaching the offensive line at Richards and working to pass on his old trade. Some of the future stars at the British Soccer Camp in Frankfort were of the …
