Evergreen Park Veteran to be Honored at Blackhawks Game

On Jan. 12, Evergreen Park resident Lance Cpl. Luis Ocasio will be honored on the ice at the Chicago Blackhawks game.

An Evergreen Park resident and veteran will get a chance to hear cheers from the crowd at the United Center later this week, as he is honored for his service to the country. At each home Chicago Blackhawks game, there is an active-duty member of the Armed Forces and a veteran in attendance during the singing of the National Anthem. On Jan. 12, resident Lance Cpl. Luis Ocasio will be standing on the ice for this special honor. Ocasio served two tours of duty in Iraq, one in 2004 and another in 2007. During his deployment, he suffered a traumatic brain injury and has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. McAuley's Boyle-Niego 'Honored' to Be Entering Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame

Therese Boyle-Niego played volleyball at Mother McAuley and went on to help the University of Pacific win a national championship.

Almost 30 years ago, Therese Boyle-Niego didn’t have much of a choice but to leave Chicago. If she wanted to play with the best volleyball players in the country, she had to go to California. That’s where the best programs were. Schools like Stanford, UCLA and USC were the ones winning national championships. So, Boyle-Niego chose to attend the University of the Pacific. In her senior season of 1985, she helped the Tigers win the school’s first volleyball national championship. But after her quick four-year stint at Pacific and a coaching gig at the University of Wisconsin, Boyle-Niego has settled back into her hometown of Chicago. And in June, Boyle-Niego received one of Chicago’s highest athletic honors: nomination into the Chicagoland …

Winter Ice Classic Comes to the South Suburbs

It was reminiscent of the NHL's Winter Classic as Homewood-Flossmoor Youth Hockey Association put on an outdoor event featuring four games of different age levels Saturday night in Evergreen Park.

Eight-year-old Liam McFadden carved through the ice Saturday evening in Evergreen Park. While the Mite hockey star wasn’t actually his favorite Chicago Blackhawk, Duncan Keith, playing in the NHL Winter Classic outdoor game, the setting was a close approximation. McFadden was fighting the elements and playing outdoors at the first-ever Homewood-Flossmoor Youth Hockey Association Winter Classic, held at the Evergreen Park Outdoor Ice Arena. The event featured four games at four different youth hockey levels: Mite, Squirt, Pee Wee and Bantam. “My son, Liam, that’s all he could talk about all week long,” Mite coach Bill McFadden said of the event. “For them to compete on this ice, this outdoor ice, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” Event …

Sincere thanks to all the athletes, coaches, and volunteers, especially Leighann and Rob Cannon who came up with this brilliant concept. Of course, it would have never happened without the leadership of Brit Terry, HF's Hockey Director, who really understands kids and how to bring people together for positive experiences such as this.
