FrancoNello's opening this month in Beverly? Andy's Frozen Custard eyes Burbank. Mariano's looks to Evergreen Park. Gotcha Haircut opens in Oak Lawn.
Calabria Imports owner Pat Roberto said this week’s closing of the Evergreen Park location at 3512 W. 95th St. was not an easy decision but one that had to be made. “It was starting to hurt the Beverly location,” he said. “I’m sorry it didn’t work out. I appreciate everything that was done for us by the mayor and customers.” Roberto said the Evergreen store had a good customer base but it just wasn’t enough to justify keeping the location open any longer. “We’ll offer delivery to Evergreen Park to try to keep those customers,” he said. “Also, any gift certificates purchased at the Evergreen Park location are good at the Beverly location.” He said the cook from Evergreen was brought over to the Beverly location as well as a couple of other …

Oak Lawn soon to announce first anchor tenant at 111th Street and Cicero, Grassano's Pizza still open. Andriana Furs consolidates in Beverly.
Aricka Westbrooks grew up in Beverly so it was only fitting that when she returned to the Windy City to relocate her business she wound up in the old neighborhood. Connect to Patch: Beverly-Mt. Greenwood / Oak Lawn / Evergreen Park Westbrooks brought her fried turkey business, aptly named Jive Turkey, to Chicago from Brooklyn because she ships the birds all across the country and shipping costs are easier from Chicago to the rest of the country. “She opened a pop-up retail store in November at 1979 W. 111th St. in time for the holidays,” said company spokeswoman Fonje Brown. “Business was so good she decided to stay in that location.” Westbrooks, a 1988 graduate of Morgan Park High School, formed Jive Turkey in 2001 after she began deep-…

The Tenth Planet comic book store moved Feb. 1 into new digs at 9736 Southwest Highway in Oak Lawn. “We moved for economic reasons,” said co-owner Paul Figura. “The space is a little smaller but the rent is better.” Figura said that despite the move to smaller quarters, he and his partner, Dan Matteson, would like to open a couple of more stores. “They’d have to be in areas that don’t already have a comic book store,” he said. “People in this business tend to be very territorial.” Fugura and Matteson each oversee a different part of the business, which was founded in Oak Lawn in 1990 and that they have owned since 2006. “I take care of the comics while Dan oversees the games part of the business,” Figura said. The store has two employees …

Leona’s restaurant closed over the weekend at 6616 W. 95th St. in Oak Lawn. The move was part of the 63-year-old chain’s retooling that includes shutting down its Hop Haus gastropub, moving a city location, closing two of its suburban locations and selling its headquarters and production facility at 3931 S. Leavitt St. in Chicago. Chicago Real Estate Daily reported that northwest Indiana-based Texas Corral Grill & Saloon had signed a lease for the Oak Lawn building, but a manager at the steakhouse’s Highland, Ind., location refused to comment and referred calls to the corporate office, which were not returned. Calls to the former Oak Lawn Leona's location are being forwarded to the Calumet City location, where a manager said half of the …

Aldi to hold job fairs this morning at area locations. Fashion Bug stores are coming to end of the road.
A co-owner of Calabria Imports in Evergreen Park said the deli's Beverly location at 1905 W. 103rd St. hopes to reopen by Thursday after closing Tuesday over what she said was a "leasing issue." "The Beverly location was closed (Tuesday and Wednesday) because the owner is working out some leasing issues with the landlord," said Victoria Barajas, a co-owner of the Evergreen location with Pat Roberto, who owns the Beverly location. "He hopes to reopen by Thursday," she said. She flatly denied the Beverly location was closed for good. "That's just not true," she said. "Pat is working on the lease." There was no mention of the closing on either the deli's website or Facebook page. The Fashion Bug store at 8735 S. Harlem Ave. in Bridgeview’s …

Connect with Patch: Oak Lawn / Evergreen Park / Beverly-Mt. Greenwood Store manager Mark Keele said the Evergreen location at 3401 W. 95th St. will be consolidating with the company’s store at 11951 W. 143rd St. in Orland Park as of Jan. 1. Keele, who has been with the company for 11 years, said all five employees at the Evergreen store would be transferring to the Orland store. “We are holding an inventory reduction sale,” he said to pare down the amount of painting supplies the company will be moving to the Orland store. “We will still deliver to the Evergreen Park area, like we …

Tony Gambino III has apparently given up on trying to make a go of a restaurant at 3342 W. 95th St. in Evergreen Park. Connect to Patch: Oak Lawn / Evergreen Park / Beverly-Mt. Greenwood Gambino first tried it with one of his Taco Fresco franchises, which have been successful elsewhere in the Chicago area but didn’t catch on in Evergreen Park or Tinley Park. About a year ago, he borrowed a page from his family’s successful Moon’s Sandwich Shop at 16 S. Western Ave. and opened Tony Moon’s Burgers, which got generally good grades from online reviewers. But Moon’s Burgers closed abruptly at the beginning of November. The phone number has been disconnected and the shop has a “for rent” sign in the window. Demolition started earlier this month …

Evergreen Park can't even keep a Starbucks open. Folks need to open their wallets or expect little if no retail improvements in their towns. I doubt a Mariano's will stay open there from what I have seen of the Frankfort store and their prices (not too high but not like a Pete's). Sadly, it is too upscale for EP given their past, recent history.   more ›
