Mustangs' senior track and field standout Amber Hunter hopes colleges get the message about her abilities.
Evergreen Park senior Amber Hunter wants colleges to take notice of her throwing ability. With her recent performances, she might have gotten their attention. On April 29, Hunter won both the shot put (33 feet, 2 inches) and the discus throw (91 feet, 4 inches) at the Chicago Christian Co-ed Invitational. She said her light-hearted approach to the day helped her succeed. “I was feeling a little goofy and I was really happy that day,” Hunter said. “I had my friend Dominique (Williams) with me; she throws with me. Us being together is like Beavis and Butthead.” This past Thursday, Hunter took second at the South Suburban Conference meet at Eisenhower in both the shot put (32 feet, 8 inches) and the discus (101 feet). She was a little more …
Mustangs senior Niko Garcia is excited about his athletic and educational opportunities at the school.
Evergreen Park senior Niko Garcia has accepted a scholarship to play football at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill. While staying relatively close to home was a consideration, Garcia said the most important factor in his decision was obtaining a good education. “Illinois Wesleyan is one of the best educational institutions in D-3 (NCAA Division III),” he said. ”My main concern was education. That was the most important.” The Illinois Wesleyan Titans compete in the College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin (CCIW), which includes Chicago-based programs such as Wheaton College, North Park University, North Central College and Elmhurst College. That will make it easier for Garcia’s family and friends to come watch him play. When …

The Mustangs had a difficult time handling pressure from Rich South Monday night, as the Stars rolled to a 56-23 girls basketball victory.
The Stars weren's aligned right for the Evergreen Park girls basketball team. Before they even knew, the Mustangs were out of the game Monday night. Rich South used a flurry of ball pressure to force turnovers in a decisive first quarter as the Stars (14-5) defeated the Mustangs 56-23. “We weren’t able to handle their traps,” said Evergreen Park coach Dave O’Rourke, whose team dropped to 6-11. “And we were throwing the ball away, turning it over.” Before the game, both O’Rourke and Rich South coach Brian Mays said guard play was going to be a key. Mays said his team was going to pressure the ball, while O’Rourke said his guards needed to be able to handle the pressure that was coming. The first quarter saw Mays’ game plan come to life, as …
After strong start, the Mustangs are confident they can make some noise during girls basketball season.
Turning heads. The idea is one that suits Evergreen Park's unheralded girls basketball team. The Mustangs started the season well, winning two out of three games in the Richards Thanksgiving Tournament. Coach Dave O'Rourke anticipates a strong showing in the South Suburban Red Conference. "Our goal is to get over .500 first, and to win conference," O'Rourke said, reflecting on the Mustangs' 10-16 record in the 2009-10 season. "It's very possible with the group of girls we have, but it won't be easy." O'Rourke and company lost two starters to graduation, including all-conference forward Kaitlin Beckow. Beckow now attends Lake Forest College. With the exit of the 2009-10 seniors, Courtney Karstrand and Emma Point are the only returning full-…
