Ed's Barber Shop has been a long-standing establisment of the Evergreen Park community. It sticks to what it does well and that is men's haircuts. Ed's also offers shaves as well.
I heard this past weekend that Ed passed away right before I was going to go see him at his shop. I have been looking for ways to get in touch with his family, to let them know, as I'm sure countless others already have, what a great guy Ed was, but I have not been able to find even a notice about him in the paper. So, I'll say it here. I went to Ed for my first real haircut about 30 years ago when I was a kid. Since then, Ed had always been a friend to me and my other family members who went to see him. He always gave you a friendly hello, a joke or two, and asked about your life (of which he always remembered the smallest details). And, even after your haircut, you could just hang out and catch the last few minutes of Jeopardy or the People's Court. I'm lucky that, a few weeks back, I got to stop in and chat with Ed even though I didn't need a haircut. What kind of barber has people come in even when they don't need a haircut? Ed Schulz, that's who. To his friends and family, I am so sorry for your loss. I and his other customers/friends will miss him greatly and saturday mornings have just gotten a little more boring. I'll think about this great guy every time I see the spinning red, white and blue sign outside of a barbershop...but I know I'm not going to find anyone quite like him inside standing behind that spinning chair. Thanks, Ed.
