VOTE: Local Resident Up for Top Honor

Resident and District 124 board member Dawn McNamara one of three finalists selected for General Motors' Our Town, Our Heroes program.

Evergreen Park resident Dawn McNamara is one of three finalists selected for General Motors' Our Town, Our Heroes program.

From now until 5 p.m. CST April 16, the public may vote once a day, every day for their favorite hero at DrivingtheMidwest.com. To vote for your favorite, click the "Vote for a Finalist" link. The hero will be announced on April 17.

One of the newer members of the , McNamara is a hairstylist who's worked with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for a decade. At a t at McNamara sat in the seat for the first time since she volunteered to cut hair for St. Baldrick’s 10 years ago. “I said if I was still doing this in 10 years, then I’d get my hair cut,” McNamara told Patch.

Her friend Heather Kash nominated her for the Our Town, Our Heroes program to spotlight her ongoing commitment to the foundation and her community presence. “Dawn goes above and beyond as a volunteer at numerous St. Baldrick’s events every year to help raise much needed funds for childhood cancer research,” wrote Kash in her nomination. “Dawn is an amazing mom and a hero to all kids; her own, local students and especially kids with cancer!”

“We received so many inspirational nominations in 2011 from Illinois residents who are going above and beyond to better their communities,” said Brian Goebel, General Motors North Central Region Communications Manager. “We’re honored and thrilled to share Dawn’s story not only with her fellow residents in Evergreen Park, but with the rest of the state as well.”

General Motors launched the Our Town, Our Heroes program in 2011 celebrating unsung heroes who inspire and empower others in their communities. Each month, the program narrows down the nominations and opens voting of the featured finalists to the public to select the winner.

The winning hero and their nominator will receive a one-week loan of an all-new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac vehicle and a full tank of gas. The hero will also receive $500 in gift cards, and the second place winning hero and their nominator will each receive a one-week vehicle loan.
