Mother McAuley Lacrosse, Water Polo Squads Seek State Glory

The Mighty Macs have been dominating on the field and in the pool.

Mother McAuley can add another sport to its illustrious history of success in athletics—lacrosse.

On Thursday, the Mighty Macs defeated Marian Catholic, 16-14 in double overtimeto advance to Monday’s St. Ignatius Sectional final.

McAuley’s squad started the season under the radar but eventually made a name for itself. According to coach Ann O’Neill, an upset win over St. Ignatius on May 12 highlighted the season.

O’Neill said her team leaders in goals are junior Karly Slattery and sophomores Francesca LoVerde and Annie Hopkins. O’Neill added that the Evergreen Park District is hosting a spring lacrosse league.

McAuley Girls Water Polo Chases State Title

Mother McAuley’s girls water polo team is on a tear. The Mighty Macs will face Fenwick today in the state semifinals at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. If the Macs win, they’ll play later in the day in the championship game, against the winner of Stevenson vs. St. Ignatius.

 In the quarterfinals of the Lyons Sectional, McAuley defeated Morton 21-4. The Mighty Macs sank Sandburg 9-6 in the semis, followed by a 7-3 victory over Lyons for the sectional championship last Saturday.

On Thursday, the Mighty Macs defeated Fremd 3-2 to advance to the state semifinals.

EP Contingent Heading to Boys Track and Field State Meet

The Evergreen Park boys track and field team are sending a large contingent of qualifiers to next weekend's state meet after competing at the Robeson Sectional on Friday. The qualifiers are:

James Annang (shot put), Nick Nastasowski (high jump), Gino Garcia, Brandon Ceh, Mike Caoeeron, Gary Graf (4 x 800 relay), Gino Garcia (800 meters), Chris Cheatham (110-meter hurdles, 300 hurdles), Victor Baker (triple jump, 300 hurdles) and Darias Contreras (triple jump).

Estand Moving Up

First stop, All-Region. Next stop, All-America?

Evergreen Park resident and St. Rita graduate Sean Estand has been named to the Daktronics Inc. All-Region First Team, according to a recent news release from the school. He was selected by the region’s sports information directors.

With his inclusion on the All-Region team, Estand will now be considered for the All-America team, which will be announced on Friday, May 27.

EP’s Rugby Connection

Are you sad the NFL might not have a season in 2011? Five Evergreen Park residents might convince you that rugby is a good alternative.

The Mount Carmel rugby team features five players from Evergreen Park: freshman Anthony Guerra, sophomores Brian Buckley and Brendan Good and seniors Sheamus Deering (team captain) and Eddie O’Connor. The Caravan recently advanced to the second round of the state rugby playoffs.

Deering recently signed a rugby scholarship to play at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Mich. Davenport is last year’s national champion.
