The Illinois High School Association released its latest round of preseason practice rules for football teams on Wednesday, May 22. The rules, which were released on the IHSA's website, dictate how long, what type and what equipment teams can wear during practices, according to a Sun Times Media report.Highlighted specifics on the new rules can be found below:

  • Teams are not allowed to practice for more than three hours during the first five days of the preseason. From day six to day 14 of the preseason, teams can alternate three- and five-hour practices. During five-hour days, teams cannot practice longer than three hours, and there must be a two-hour break period between workouts.
  • During the first two days of practice, teams can only practice in helmets only, followed by helmets and shoulder pads for the next three days. Teams can then go full pads after that.
  • Teams are also not allowed to practice during the first two Sundays of the preseason
  • Once the season begins, players must participate in at least 12, 90-minute practice sessions before participating in a game. Practices the day of a contest do not count towards the 12 practice total.
