Gimme 5: Surf's Up for Marist's Dempsey

RedHawk senior boys volleyball setter will be playing at UC San Diego next year.

Marist senior setter Garrett Dempsey won’t have to deal with the cold any more.

Dempsey is heading to UC San Diego in the fall to play as a setter for the Tritons. He might even pick up surfing.

“I’ll have to learn, I guess,” Dempsey said of surfing. “But I might as well.”

Dempsey chose San Diego over his two other suitors, Ball State and Long Beach State. He said UCSD is a better fit academically and that he has family in the San Diego area.

Dempsey started playing club volleyball in seventh grade. Now, he plays a key role on a Marist team trying to repeat as state champions.

“I think ultimately we want to go back downstate and repeat,” Dempsey said of the team’s goal for the season. “But we’ll take it step-by-step, and see how we do.”

Marist won the RedHawk Invite this past weekend. Here’s the story from the Southtown Star.
