Former Champion Starts Youth Wrestling Program in Evergreen Park

Fall high school sports season intensifies with McAuley avenging a volleyball loss to Marist, the Redhawks scoring soccer victories, Evergreen routing Richards in football, and much more.

A new youth wrestling program is beginning at . Dinamo Wrestling Club is designed for kids from the ages of 6 to 14.

The new club is run by former Eastern Illinois University assistant coach and NJCAA national champion Vladimir Anoshenko. The winter folkstyle season will run from November through March.

Registration will be held at the Evergreen Park High School cafeteria on Oct. 6 (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.) and Oct. 8 (9 a.m. to 11 a.m.).

Girls Volleyball: Mustangs Get Key Conference Win

Evergreen Park has struggled to start the season, but the young Mustangs are showing signs that their best volleyball is ahead of them.

The Mustangs went 1-1 last week, defeating Argo, 25-16, 25-23, while also falling to T.F. South, 25-12, 25-18. Senior setter Sam Rule had four kills and dished out 14 assists in the two-game win over Argo, while middle blocker Patrice Silas had seven kills for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs stand at 5-13 on the season, including 2-5 in South Suburban Conference play.

Girls Volleyball: McAuley Upends Marist in Rematch

After swept two weeks ago, the Mighty Macs exacted some revenge by defeating the RedHawks in the semifinals of the Rich East Invitational this past weekend.

Marist and Mother McAuley both swept through pool play, going 3-0 and not dropping a game to set up a midseason rematch between the two rivals. But this time McAuley came out on top, beating Marist 25-17, 29-27 to advance to the championship. There, McAuley defeated Lyons 25-19, 25-21 to win the invitational title. Marist settled for third after beating Providence in the consolation match 25-21, 25-18.

Both teams were represented on the all-tournament team, as Marist’s Ashley Holder and Mother McAuley’s Lizzie Scanlon and Courtney Joyce received the honors.

Soccer: Marist Earns Back-to-Back Wins

The RedHawks posted two victories last week, defeating St. Patrick 2-0 and Nazareth 6-1. Joe Gainer and Roger Ciszewski scored for Marist against St. Patrick.

With the two victories, the RedHawks moved to 8-5-1 on the season, including 3-0 in East Suburban Catholic play.

Football: Brother Rice, Marist Fall to 3-2

Both and Marist had trouble stopping the run on Friday night, resulting in double-digit conference losses for the two area private schools.

For Brother Rice, it was Brandon Greer providing the offensive kryptonite. The Mount Carmel running back totaled 240 yards and three touchdowns in the Caravan’s 35-24 victory.

Boys Golf: Evergreen Splits Pair

Evergreen Park went 1-1 last week on the links, splitting its two dual matches but showing consistency. The Mustangs first fell to Westmont 168-179 in a nonconference matchup. One day later, Evergreen Park edged Argo 179-186. Nick Moran and Trevor Mlot tied for the low round to take home medalist honors.

Football: Mustangs Blank Richards

Evergreen Park (3-2) made a statement on Friday night, that put the Mustangs in prime position to make a run at the playoffs.

Chris Cheatham and Jared Jackson each had touchdowns in the first half and Evergreen Park’s defense shut down Richards’ dual-threat QB Tommy Mister.

The Mustangs take on Oak Lawn, which is also 3-2, next Friday night in Evergreen Park.
