Evergreen Park Swimming Places Second at Shepard Invitational

Marist and Mother McAuley make impressive showings at last weekend's Reavis boys and girls cross-country invitational.

The Evergreen Park girls swim team was edged by Oak Forest at the Shepard Invite last weekend, but not without Kerry Symanski making her mark.

Oak Forest finished with 346 team points, while Evergreen Park came in with 326, more than 100 points better than third-place Richards.

Symanski was the Mustangs’ only individual winner, taking the 200 freestyle in 2:15.15.

Eight teams competed in the meet.

Football Mustangs Look for Balance

Evergreen Park suffered its first defeat of the season in a 28-9 loss to Eisenhower and a lot of it had to do with the Mustangs’ inability to consistently move the football.

Victor Baker is a workhorse in the backfield, but early on against Eisenhower he was relied upon too often. Evergreen Park quarterback Jesse McLain attempted only one pass in the first half and the Cardinals stacked the box in hopes of containing Baker.

When the Mustangs fell behind, coach Dan Hartman went to the passing game out of necessity. McLain threw 17 times in the second half, completing six of them. As terrific a running back as Baker is, he can’t consistently break runs against eight- and nine-man fronts.

Boys Golf Splits Two Duals

Evergreen Park went 1-1 in its two boys golf duals last week. The Mustangs fell to Richards 167-177 on Sept. 6, but rebounded to defeat Oak Lawn 179-187 two days later.

Nick Moran shot 41 against Oak Lawn to take home medalist honors.

Marist, McAuley Take Care of Business

Mother McAuley’s season-opening loss to Joliet Catholic seems like a distant memory. The Mighty Macs demolished Mount Assisi 25-12, 25-9 last week. Lizzy Scanlon put down seven kills and had three digs, while Annie Myren had eight assists and two aces for Mother McAuley (3-1).

Marist also had two convincing wins last week, taking out Fenwick 25-13, 25-11 and following that up with a 25-19, 25-19 victory over Stagg a day later.

Marist Tennis Dominates Quad

Playing three tennis matches in one day can be an arduous task for any team. To almost sweep through all three would be quite the accomplishment.

Marist won convincingly in its own quad on Saturday. With 14 wins, the RedHawks easily outpaced Mother McAuley (11), Eisenhower (3) and Richards (2). Marist swept Richards and Eisenhower 5-0 and beat Mother McAuley 4-1 for the quad win.

Caddigan Paces Brother Rice

Led by individual winner Dan Caddigan, Brother Rice took second in the Reavis boys corss-country invitational last weekend. Lyons edged Brother Rice 73-82 for the title. Caddigan completed the three-mile course in 15:38, a full 12 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Nicholas Korhumel of Libertyville.

Cody Haberkom (16:05) and Kyle Hauser (16:12) finished fifth and sixth for Marist, which placed third as a team with 92 points.

On the girls side, Marist’s Maggie O’Loughlin won the individual title (18:30) and led the RedHawks to a second-place finish. Lyons also won the girls team title, edging Marist 33-40.

Mother McAuley (85) finished in third place with Margaret Hurley (18:56) and Bridget McQuinn (19:13.4) crossing the line in fifth and seventh place.
