Evergreen Park Girls Soccer Team Breaks Through

The Mustangs got their first goal and first victory of the season at Bremen. Meanwhile, Evergreen's boys track team made some noise at the Prep Top Times Meet.

Freshman Kelly Shine scored the lone goal in Evergreen Park’s 1-0 girls soccer victory over host Bremen on Thursday.

“I felt the adrenaline and I ran and I got it in there,” Shine said of her goal, which came on a breakaway.

Shine’s goal was the first of the season for Evergreen Park, and it led to the Mustangs’ first win of the season.

“It was a rough start to the season. It was also a cold start,” coach Anna Wilson said after Thursday’s victory. “I definitely saw better play today. They played as a team.”

Evergreen Park is 1-1 in the South Suburban Conference. On Monday, the Mustangs lost 2-0 to Oak Lawn.

Mustangs On Track

Evergreen Park’s boys track team was well represented at last weekend’s Illinois Prep Top Times Meet, an indoor state meet, at Illinois Wesleyan University. Chris Cheatham had a very successful day for the Mustangs, posting an 8.16 in the 55-meter high hurdles in the prelims, a personal best. That time qualified him for the finals, in which he improved his time even more, to 7.98, which earned him seventh place.

“It was a great day for him and I was very proud of his performance,” Evergreen Park coach Ray Mankowski said in an email.

Triple jumper Victor Brown’s day wasn’t as successful as Cheatham’s, but his coach was still proud of him. Brown jumped 40 feet, 9½ inches.

“Qualifying is part of the battle,” Mankowski noted.

Good things could be ahead for the team.

“I am very proud of their accomplishments and I am excited to see what the outdoor season brings us,” Mankowski added.
