Evergreen Park Boys Track and Field Team Hopes to Add to Historic Season

The Mustangs won their first-ever sectional championship and hope to bring home some medals from this weekend's state meet.

This season’s Evergreen Park boys track and field team is making history.

On May 20 at the Chicago Robeson Sectional, the Mustangs became the school’s first boys track and field team to win a sectional championship. The margin wasn’t close either, as Evergreen Park posted 134 points, while Kenwood and University High tied for second with 64 points at Hanson Stadium.

The Mustangs qualified for state in nine different events: James Annang (2nd in shot put), Nick Nastasowski (2nd in high jump), Gino Garcia, Brandon Ceh, Gary Graf and Mike Calderon (1st in the 4 x 800 relay), Gino Garcia (1st in 800 meters), Chris Cheatham (1st in 110-meter hurdles, 2nd in 300 hurdles), Victor Baker (2nd in triple jump, 1st in 300 hurdles) and Darias Contreras (1st in triple jump).

“It was a great day winning the sectional and getting so many to the meet,” Evergreen Park coach Ray Mankowski said in an email.

The state meet at O’Brien Stadium in Charleston began Thursday and will conclude today.

“One thing we talk/joke about is when you get out of the tent before your race is don't look left,” Mankowski said. “Upon exiting the tent on the left is the stands which has 5-7000 people watching you. At that meet you are on an island, you have to step up and run the greatest race you can.”

Mankowski said he is confident in his athletes.

“I am looking forward for someone to come home with some hardware,” he said.

Brother Rice Boys Volleyball Team Falls in Regional

The Brother Rice boys volleyball season ended on Wednesday evening in the regional championship match of the Lincoln-Way East Regional. The host team beat the Crusaders 25-22, 25-15.

Brother Rice advanced to play Lincoln-Way East after defeating Richards 25-18, 25-15 on Monday.

EP Softball Plays for Regional Title

Evergreen Park’s softball team will play Kankakee today at 11 a.m. in the championship game of the Evergreen Park Regional.

“Kankakee’s going to be a good team coming in,” Evergreen Park coach John O’Connor said after .

While it might be easy for Evergreen Park to overlook its opponents in anticipation of a possible matchup with Oak Forest, O’Connor said he’s not letting his team do that.

“I’ve already scouted Kankakee, I know they’re too good. They have some really good players,” O’Connor said. “We know it’s going to be close wherever we go. We’re going to take it one at a time. Kankakee’s our next focus.”

Flannigan Named New EP Boys Hoops Coach

Evergreen Park High School recently announced Patrick Flannigan as its new boys head basketball coach. Flannigan was an assistant at Evergreen Park for 11 years. He also brings nine years of coaching experience prior to his time at Evergreen Park, with stints at Leo, St. Rita, Luther South and Reavis.

EP Hosting Hoops Camp for Youngsters

Evergreen Park High School will hold a coed basketball camp for those in grades 3 through 8 during the weeks of June 20-24 and June 27-July 1. The camp will run from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Newly named Mustangs head coach Patrick Flannigan will host the camp.

“I have many years of summer camp experience since I have worked at the Doug Collins Camp, Northwestern University Camp, Chicago Bulls Academy Camp and Chicago Park District Summer Basketball Camps,” Flannigan said in an email.

Flannigan said those interested should call Linda Konley in the athletic department at 708-398-1264 to register.

McAuley’s Girls Lacrosse Team Falls

The Mother McAuley girls lacrosse team lost to St. Ignatius 19-9 on Monday. The Mighty Macs finished with a 7-9 record in this, their first varsity season in the sport.
