Athlete of the Week: Brother Rice's Wilson Off to Blazing Start in Outdoor Track

Brother Rice senior James Wilson won both the long jump and the 400 at a recent outdoor meet and was the anchor of a 4x100 team that placed first this past Saturday at Oak Lawn.

Brother Rice senior James Wilson has surprised even himself at the beginning of the outdoor track and field season for the Crusaders.

On Thursday, April 7, Wilson placed first in both the 400 and the long jump at the Hawk Classic at Hillcrest.

He ran a 51.6 to win the 400 and jumped 21 feet, 5 inches to win the long jump. Heading into the day, Wilson didn’t expect to take first in the two events.

“I was really surprised,” Wilson said. “I thought the (athlete) from Hillcrest was going to win the long jump.”

His training has paid off even more this season than expected.

“I don’t know where it came from. It just happened,” he said.

This past Saturday, Wilson was the anchor for the Brother Rice 4x100 meter relay team that took first place at the Spartan Invite at Oak Lawn with a time of 44.8.

For his efforts, Wilson has been named Patch’s Athlete of the Week.
