Analysis: Mustangs Corraled by the Cardinals' High-Octane Offense

Eisenhower used a three-point barrage to slow down Evergreeen Park in Friday night's 98-79 boys basketball victory.

Dr. Tom Davis originated the five-in, five-out, fullcourt press and shoot early-and-often style of basketball that has become Eisenhower's trademark.

The Cardinals showed off their run-and-gun style in Friday's 98-79 boys basketball victory over Evergreen Park.

Eisenhower set the tone early. Despite making only 8-of-24 shots, they still managed to take a 25-21 lead on coach Bruce Scaduto's Mustangs.

“We tried to simulate their style in practice, but they have a deep team and their kids have bought into the concept, which makes them tough to slow down,” Scaduto said.

The Cardinals were so effective at creating opportunities for shots that they were able to launch 99 shots compared to Evergreen Park's 58 attempts. The big winners of the shot derby for the Cardinals were Tyrone Terrel, who scored a game-high 30 points, and Dustan Lewis, who added 22 points.

When the Mustangs did break the fierce Cardinal press, they enjoyed a tremendous shooting night as they were 34-of-58 from the field (58 percent). Six-four Marcus Kemp (20 points) and 6-3 James Werner (22 points) were a combined 18-of-22, but even that was not good enough to overcome the Mustangs' 49 turnovers.

Eisenhower outrebounded Evergreen Park 45-34, including 30-10 on the offensive end.

The Mustangs also received a double-digit scoring night from senior Dillon Knight with 10 points. But the 5-6 senior was no match for the relentless style of play Eisenhower brings to the table. With the loss, the Mustangs remained winless in conference action as they dropped to 0-13 and 5-23 overall.

Good News: A new season begins with the IHSA state tournament, which has Evergreen Park opening up against Joliet Catholic Academy in a regional game Monday at Thornton Fractional North North in Calumet City.

Bad News: The Evergreen Park sophomores also lost to Eisenhower 65-53.

Fact: Eisenhower broke the national record for three-point attempts in a season with 1,309 attempts. The old mark was 1,380. The Cardinals also hold the Illinois record for three-pointers made in a season at 331.
