The Rundown: D 231 Approves Tentative Budget and Hears Fall Sports Update

District 231 Board of Education agreed that the budget for fiscal year 2012 will be finalized on Sept. 27, but also discussed the school's sports and potential corporate sponsorship.

, Superintendent M. Elizabeth Hart and the Board of Education met for a regular board meeting on Tuesday to discuss a variety of topics.

Tentative Budget Presentation

For fiscal year 2012, District 231 Board of Education said it used conservative estimates to prepare a tentative budget. After using low estimates for revenues and high estimates for expenditures, Hart said the districts budgeted the Capital Projects Fund and the Fire Prevention and Safety funds "to have expenditures exceed revenue at June 30, 2012." The Capital Projects Fund, which will be funded from a working cash fund transfer, is estimated at $505,000, wile the other fund, which is funded with fund balance reserves, is estimated at $170,017.

In reference to the fund balances, Hart said several funds were budgeted for surplus at June 30, 2012. According to her, as of June 30, 2011, the State of Illinois owed the district $366,000 in grant funding. "Due to current fiscal condition of the State of Illinois and unpredictability of when payments will be processed, the budgets for mandated state categorical payments have been reduced to half of the actual amount the District is entitled to receive," Hart detailed in her presentation to the Board of Education. District 231 board will hold a budget hearing on Sept. 27 and expects to finalize the budget then.

Fall Sports Update

Athletic director Jim Soldan said that since the beginning of the new school year, freshman participation in sports has risen, and that "there about 350 student athletes, not including cheerleading," our of the 835 students in the building. Soldan expressed the need for teachers to enter grades into the computer grading system at least weekly, because they affect a student's ability to participate in sports. According to him, he is working with teachers to help students maintain athletic eligibility and improve their grade point average, as well.

Wrestling Club Approved

District 231 Board of Education voted 7-0 to approve a wrestling club proposal presented to Soldan by Former Eastern Illinois University assistant Wrestling coach and experienced wrestler Vladimir Anoshenko. According to Soldan, Anoshenko is interested in bringing a club for pre-teens to Evergreen Park Community High School, however the board expressed the need for "special rules for Evergreen Park residents."
