Students Experience Close Shave at 'Mission Madness' Tourney: Viewfinder

Co-ed basketball teams from Brother Rice and Mother McAuley turn tourney hoopla into an opportunity to raise money for charities.

No, it wasn't March Madness.

Rather, it was Mission Madness. Brother Rice students first concocted the idea of a basketball fundraiser and then teamed with students from Mother McAuley to turn the idea into a reality on Saturday.

Before the opening tip, students from both schools met in committees to talk about issues ranging from ethics and publicity to bracketing and handling at-the-door donations.

Once that was done, it was a matter of playing ball. And shaving heads.

St. Baldrick's set up a head-shaving station that had students and parents alike in line to show their support for the fundraiser. Also, T-shirts and buttons were sold with proceeds going to St. Baldrick's.

The students divided into 27 teams, each donating $10 per team with $5 of that going to T-shirts. Each team chose a charity to play for and the winners received monetary donations for their chosen charity.

There were no losers. Each charity will receive a check and a letter from the students explaining why they chose their charity.

“We hope this event is just the beginning of many more to come," Mother McAuley student moderator Jennifer Novosel said. " I hope to see even more teams next year.”

A few of the charities that were chosen by the teams: St. Baldrick's, PAWS, Salvation Army, UNICEF and the Special Olympics. In all, 27 charities were picked by the teams playing basketball.
