Evergreen Park Students Donate a Day to Misericordia

EPCHS student board ambassador organizes student outreach project over spring break.

While most Evergreen Park Community High School students were sleeping late and enjoying their time off from school during spring break, a group of Evergreen Park students donated their time to Misericordia, a community of care for persons with mile to profound developmental disabilities.

Not one to lay around over spring break, EPCHS senior Maggie O’Toole, student ambassador to the Dist. 231 school board, came up with the idea at one of the principal’s advisory meetings. Maggie researched local non-profit organizations and set-up a student work day at Misericordia.

Maggie, along with principal Bill Sanderson and science teacher Anna Tsoukatos, and four other students, Eleni Eliopoulos, Erica Byrne, Erin Byrne, and Moira Wood, drove up to the North Side to Misericordia’s West Ridge campus to volunteer their day to helping others.

The group started their day at 9:30 a.m. with a full tour of the Misericordia complex. They then had lunch and continued the day working with some of the residents in three job areas:  coffee and tea packaging, the bakery, and art design. The day ended at 2:30 p.m. with everyone feeling fulfilled after spending their day helping others.

The group is anxious to explore additional opportunities and have others join them in their quest to give back to the community.
