Chicago Cares and Chicago White Sox Volunteer Corps to Commemorate 10-year Anniversary of Sept. 11 Attacks with School Transformation Project

Hundreds Will Participate in Restoring McClellan School Sept. 10

Chicago Cares, the city’s premier nonprofit volunteer service organization, and
the Chicago White Sox Volunteer Corps, along with volunteers from Chicago area
companies and community organizations, will participate in the 9/11
Day of Service
and Remembrance by transforming McClellan Elementary School, 3527 S. Wallace,
Chicago.

Chicago Cares will manage the project, in primary partnership with the
Chicago White
Sox and engaging volunteers from the White Sox Volunteer Corps, JPMorgan Chase,
Best Buy and the community. Volunteers will complete hands-on projects such as
painting, murals, mosaics, construction and landscaping.

Chicago Cares is joining organizations and individuals around the
country that are

good deeds, charitable activity and volunteer service in U.S. history
to pay tribute to the
9/11 victims and survivors and those who rose in service following the

“This movement captures the desire of millions of caring Americans and
people around
the world to pay tribute, as well as our collective determination to
not forget those lost,
the injured, and the many who rose in service in response to the
attacks,” said Jay S.
Winuk, vice president and co-founder of MyGoodDeed, and brother Glenn J. Winuk,
an attorney and volunteer firefighter who died in the line of duty on
September 11,
2001. “The 10-year anniversary of 9/11 provides a remarkable
opportunity to rekindle
that much needed spirit of unity and create a historic tribute of
service and reflection

that will forever honor both the victims and heroes of the 9/11 attacks.”

About 9/11 Day: The annual 9/11 Day Observance is a day when
individuals, nonprofits,
companies, schools and other groups around the world remember by
doing, taking time
to engage in charitable service in tribute of the victims and
survivors of 9/11 and all
those who rose in service in response to the attacks. MyGoodDeed, the
prominent 9/
11 nonprofit, and HandsOn Network, the volunteer activation division
of Points of Light
Institute, are leading an influential coalition of organizations that
are working together to
plan and implement the 9/11 Day Observance for the 10-year anniversary
of 9/11, with
the goal of organizing the single largest day of charitable service in
U.S. history.

In 2009, the United States Congress passed bipartisan legislation,
signed by President
Barack Obama, which formally recognized Sept. 11 as a National Day of
Service and
Remembrance. Thanks to the tireless efforts by the 9/11 families and community,
nonprofits, governments and businesses that support them, 9/11 Day Observance
creates a permanent, positive tribute to all those lost and those who
rose in service.
