Brother Rice Graduates Rise Above Ashes of the Year's Obstacles

Brother Rice High School Class of 2011 gave out 242 diplomas Thursday, including one honorary diploma, given to the parents of Jarrett Rowe, who died in September.

There were lots of stories from the class of 2011 at Brother Rice High School. Take for instance the  Menke quadruplets. The three graduated Thursday and their sister . Then there is Michael Healy who beat cancer and celebrated his graduation.

But out of the 242 diplomas given out from Brother Rice Thursday evening, one was missing, Jarrett Rowe.  Many graduates brought Rowe's memory to the graduation.   A few of them spoke of the impact his short life made upon theirs.

“Today I’m looking up to my friend, Jarrett Rowe” said Brandon Clinton. “He was a lively guy, he put a smile on your face. He taught everyone to keep their head up.  His death, it hurt me , he’s here in spirit today , that’s why I keep pushing forward,” Clinton said, as he lined up for graduation.

Kravaughn Eldridge, who is planning to go to Moraine Valley for two years then finish up with a Masters degree in Florida, also remembered Rowe.

“Everyday a friend can have your back at any type of situation. Like with the death of Jarrett, we were all together for that time. He had a lot of talent, a lot of potential in life," said Eldridge.

Additionally, Eldridge said Rowe's death made him think differently about life. "His death has made me push forward. I’m more focused and determined. I’m not only doing this for myself, I’m doing this for the memory of Jarrett. My success is not in vain. Brother Rice has also helped me propel, to help the kids of the next generation.”

Parents, teachers and Brother Rice High School principal, James Antos gave volumes of encouragement to the graduating class of 2011. Antos joked that in the school's 52-year history, the class of 2011 was the first class that jammed the dance floor before they ate at their prom.  He encouraged his class to keep dancing.

Antos also spoke about the many hours of service the senior class did, including helping with the local PADS shelters, donating items to the troops and walking for a cure for breast cancer. Antos encouraged the 2011 class to continue service for the downtrodden.  “ I want you to make our world better for humankind, your soul has been touched,” said Antos.

A few students spoke about how important graduation means to them.  “Today shows what I came through, how I overcame obstacles and now I’m going on to the next big step in my life” said Healy. He beat the odds and beat cancer.

Along with 240 brothers, he celebrates his graduation and his life.

As the last diploma was given out, Dr. Kevin Burns asked for the parents of Rowe to come up, to bestow an honorary diploma in his name. Giving a standing ovation, the crowd did not forget Rowe's life, nor did the brothers, teachers or staff.

The memories live on, and so will the zeal of Brother Rice High School's Class of 2011.

Congratulations Graduates!
