Village Board Briefer: New Fitness Center Proposal on Hold, Parade Awards and Upcoming Events

In a longer-than-usual Village Board Meeting, Trustees postponed voting to grant a special use petition that would turn a portion of The Plaza into a fitness center.

The Village Board met this week, granted several requests and voted to table discussion of a new fitness center in the space of the former Office Depot on the property of The Plaza. Here were a few hot topics:

Trustees Place Fitness Center Proposal on Hold

After hearing a short presentation from Planet Fitness to build a fitness center at the former Office Depot on the property of The Plaza, trustees voted to postpone the decision to vote on a special use petition for the space. The proposal, presented at last month's special Zoning Board of Appeals meeting, would allow a 24-hour fitness facility in the village, even though the  Trustees questioned the profitability of the business--how it's revenue would positively impact the Village of Evergreen Park.

Groups Recognized for EP Parade

Chairwoman of the Annual Evergreen Park Independence Day Parade, Laura Shallow presented awards to winners. Groups included girl scouts, a funeral home, Evergreen Park Community High School band, and other businesses in and out of the village.

How much did the Village spend on bills last month?

The village approved Resolution No. 19-2011, the amount of money spent out of several funds in May. Out of the general corporate fund, the sewer and water funds, the street fund and additional funds, the village spent a grand total of $853,263.73 for the month of July.

How much cash did the Village bring in last month?

The Water Collector collected $517,032.05 last month, while the Village Collector took in $1,392,578.37 from the general and sewer and water funds. 

Requests Granted

  • Trustees approved a request from Police Chief Michael Saunders to declare vacancies and hire three officers from the probationary patrol officer eligibility list.
  • The Village Board approved a request from the Illinois Municipal League to designate a delegate and alternate delegate for the 98th Annual Conference, held Sept. 15 to Sept. 17, at the Hilton Hotel in Downtown Chicago.
  • The board approved a request from Most Holy Redeemer Parish to have a homecoming parade on Oct. 1, an annual mass in Duffy Park on Sept. 11, and to hold its Second Annual 5K Run/Walk event on Sept. 15.

Miscellaneous Items and Announcements

  • Farmers Market continues each Thursday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., through October.
  • The village will hold a special meeting on August 15. Information is forthcoming.
  • The village continues the 50/50 Sidewalk Pavement project. Residents may sign up at Village Hall by August 5. Under the project terms, the village will pay $65 per square of concrete, and residents will also pay $65 per square.
