Trustee Retires After 50 Years of Public Service

Former Police Chief Norbert Smith proclaimed "loyal friend, and mentor to many." That story and more from the village of Evergreen Park board meeting last night.

“The [mayor] is on my list because I told him no fanfare,” Trustee Norbert Smith kidded to a board room packed with Evergreen Park colleagues, friends and family at a regular meeting last night. "It's bittersweet, but it's time to move on."

After five decades of service – as police chief for 16 years and village trustee for 14 years consecutively – Smith received an honorable proclamation of retirement from the board.

“I'd like to thank my wife,” Smith continued, “for the sacrifice she's made and the time she's spent alone.”

After receiving recognition from State Rep. (D-Evergreen Park) and House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago), Smith was proclaimed an “intermediary, always sharing his time and resources with a sense of humor and humanity.”

Evergreen Park Patch will have Smith's story and more later this week.
