Sexton Looks Like a Winner in Evergreen Park Mayoral Race

Based on uncertified vote totals, it appears Mayor James Sexton will come out on top against write-in candidate Shawn Good.

It's another four years for Mayor James Sexton.

Based on the number of ballots cast and the total unofficial vote tally it appears that Sexton has come out on top over write-in challenger Shawn Good.

"I feel great, I have great supporters and we will continue on," Sexton said Tuesday night.

Sexton had 2,560 votes out of 2,911 ballots cast, according to unofficial Cook County Clerk's office vote tallies. The actual write-in ballots will be tallied in about one week.

Good mounted a write-in campaign after she was removed from the ballot due to  incorrect petition fasteners and an inadequate number of signatures.

In the past year, Sexton has overcome a serious bout of West Nile Virus that left him hospitalized for weeks and facing months of physical therapy.

"A challenge is always good, whether it be occupational therapy, physical therapy or an election," Sexton said.

After his victory, Sexton hit back at the notion suggested by some that the virus left him unable to do the job of mayor. He says he spent 12 hours out at the polls today and is as energized as ever.

"The people spoke and I love them all and I will represent them for another four years," Sexton said.

He had some advice for his challenger who was new to local politics.

"Get involved, not just think you can start as the mayor," Sexton said. "You have to . . . get out and talk to your residents. I've been doing this for 30 years."

Good did not return a call for comment.

Sexton says the Plaza, a potential new Mariano's grocery store and other business developments will be a priority in his next term.
