Election 2011: D 124 Board Candidate Kimberly Panico Leonard on the Issues

As a follow-up to our initial candidate questionnaires, Evergreen Park Patch asked the candidates of District 124 Board of Education a few issue-based questions to get a more in-depth view of them.

Eight candidates are campaigning for three seats on the Village of Evergreen Park Elementary School District 124 Board of Education. answers a few issue-based questions about the school district, consolidations and its relationship with other area schools.

Do you think Districts 124 and 231 should combine?

In order to make that type of change you need to be well informed of the possible outcomes.  Research about combining school districts is a huge process that would need to be done by a qualified research company to ensure all aspects are considered.  I do not believe in the short term it would have a positive impact for our taxpayers.  Therefore, we can not burden taxpayers with higher taxes.

Should District 124 consider consolidation with other area districts?

No, I do not believe that we should consolidate with other towns or villages at this time.

How can District 124 be more efficient?

In these economic times, it will be important to look at all revenues and expenditures. As an example, bonuses cannot be given to employees when real fiscal accountability has not been established. Schools are not for profit entities and therefore it will be important to ensure spending is responsible, the budget is balanced and the education of the children is primary to each decision that is made within the district.

How will you hold the superintendent more accountable?

I think there needs to be more open discussion during board meetings with the public about items that are being voted on by the board members.  If there was more discussion during the meetings it would hold both administrators and board members accountable for their actions.

How can District 124 cooperate better with private schools in the village?

EP School District #124 has always had a strong relationship with the private schools in Evergreen Park.
