Election 2011: D 124 Board Candidate David Marzec on the Issues

As a follow-up to our initial candidate questionnaires, Evergreen Park Patch asked the candidates of District 124 Board of Education a few issue-based questions to get a more in-depth view of them.

Eight candidates are campaigning for three seats on the Village of Evergreen Park Elementary School District 124 Board of Education.   answers a few issue-based questions about the school district, consolidations and its relationship with other area schools.

Do you think Districts 124 and 231 should combine?

I believe it’s in Evergreen Park’s best interest to consider this option. The 231 and 124 boards need to independently evaluate the negative implications on the children/young adults' education. Before an evaluation, my position is that it seems like common sense to consolidate these two districts and use the additional capital for needed resources.

Should District 124 consider consolidation with other area districts?

My position above holds even more water now that Pat Quinn has floated this idea. This state has been mismanaged for years. The last thing we need is Quinn telling us we need to consolidate. If Evergreen is going to consolidate, we should do it under our own terms and consolidate all Evergreen school together. Rather than be mandated to consolidate with portions of other Worth Township schools, for example.

How can District 124 be more efficient?

A good first step would be to review all 3rd party contracts, seek new bids for cost savings. One initiative I strongly support is "Keeping the green in Evergreen" these businesses are the backbone of the village. I would support local businesses, members of the village Chamber of Commerce receiving district contracts.

How will you hold the superintendent more accountable?

Outline the district 124 strategic plan and measure the districts success in achieving these individual goals. Ask the tough question, did the superintendent strive to achieve this goal or was this goal achieved indirectly of the superintendent?

How can District 124 cooperate better with private schools in the village?

I don't feel collaboration between public and private schools is ultimately in 124's best interest. Last thing Evergreen needs is another drawn out legal battle.
