Cook County has introduced a new program that will allow family and friends of drunk driving accident victims a chance to purchase roadside memorials for their killed loved ones.
The DUI Memorial Program allows family members to purchase roadside markers that would encourage other drivers not to drink and drive for $150. The price tag would include installation and maintenance for two years.
“Families will be able to honor their loved ones in the most meaningful way— by reminding travelers of the dangers of drinking and driving,” Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said in a news release. “It also gives families the chance to promote public safety and potentially save lives.”
A similar program is already offered by the state. To have the chance to purchase a memorial, the fatal accident had to have occurred on roads under county jurisdiction after Jan. 1, 1990.
