Police Blotter: Sam's Club Customer Takes Swing at a Security Guard

Sam's Club Swinging

 arrested a man accused of hitting a Sam’s Club security guard who caught him stealing two bottles of alcohol.

According to reports, police arrested Alonzo Chavis, 21, of Chicago at about 5:22 p.m. at 9400 S. Western Ave.

Police said Chavis had placed two bottles of liquor in his pants and security saw him. As they were escorting him to the security office, “he took a swing at the security guard,” police said.

Chavis was ultimately charged with battery and retail theft. The total value of the items were $52.76.

FRIDAY, DEC. 2

Police Stop Swerving Car and Find Marijuana

After police stopped a swerving car at 95th Street and California Avenue, police said, officers found pot in the car.

According to reports, police stopped the car at about 10:02 p.m., and smelled the marijuana, then found out that the driver, Michael Ricks, 33, of Chicago, had a suspended license. Police said when they took Ricks into custody, they found a hand-rolled blunt in the car from the side of the driver’s seat.

Police charged Ricks with possession of marijuana.

MONDAY, NOV. 28

Walmart Retail Theft

Evergreen Park Police said a woman walked the aisles of Walmart, 2500 W. 95th St., at about 3:18 p.m., selecting items, placing them in a bag in her cart, then putting a coat over the bag. According to reports, Lisa Johnson, 58, of Chicago paid for some items but not the things that were in the bag. Police caught her upon leaving, reports said, and she had taken 17 items valued at $177.46. Johnson was charged with retail theft.

Two Women Accused of Stealing from Walmart

Walmart store security saw two women try to steal items from the store. At about 4:30 p.m., security saw Deniva Nichols, 22, of Chicago removing items from display and putting them in her jacket. Nichols was with Kimberly Smith, 22, of Chicago, who was placing items inside a black bag that sat in her shopping cart, police said. According to reports, when they went to the checkout lanes, Smith paid for some items but not the ones inside of the black bag. Nichols did not attempt to make any payment at all, police said.

When the women were in the security office, security officers found an 8.5-gram bag of marijuana on Nichols, police said.

Police ultimately charged Nichols with retail theft and possession of marijuana. Smith was charged with retail theft, according to reports.

MONDAY, NOV. 21

Damaged Car

Police said Mario Luna, 49, of Oak Lawn was charged with criminal damage to property. According to reports, at about 6:47 p.m., a call came in claiming that someone’s front tire was slashed, windshield smashed and there was an egg on the windshield hood of the trunk of a car. Police said the incident occurred at a house on the 9600 block of Harding Avenue.
