According to police reports, Martin approached a woman in the electronics section at Walmart, 2500 W. 95th St., at about 4:10 p.m. and said he had a friend who worked in the back and could give her a discounted television. Police said Martin told the woman to call a phone number, and while on the phone, a man named "Mike" agreed to her paying him $196 for a television. Reports said "Mike" told the woman to place her $196 in a white envelope, write "Gary Rosa COD" on it, then place it inside a gray clipboard with Rosa's name on it, located in the electronics section. Police said "Mike" then told the victim to remove a yellow envelope and take it to a man named Jose in the electronics department. There were three envelopes in the clipboard when police investigated, and according to reports, one had shredded paper in it, and another had the woman's $196. Police said store security saw Martin take the envelope with the money out of the clipboard. The man told her that a man named "Jose" would then take the television to her car, police said. According to police reports, store security was watching the entire time.

Police said security brought the victim to the security office for investigation, then they found Martin at the front door and took him to the office for investigation, as well. Security recovered a white envelope from Martin, containing the victim's money, then recovered a yellow envelope from the victim containing shredded paper, police said. According to reports, security recovered the gray clipboard, which had a third white envelope in it filled with shredded paper. According to police Martin did not claim the money in the envelope as his, and the victim confirmed that she placed the money in the envelope, and believed she was purchasing the television at a deal from Martin and Rosa.

Felony Driving on a Suspended License and a DUI

Police said Calvin C. Carter, 31, of Chicago, was charged with felony driving on a suspended license at about 1:34 a.m. According to reports, police stopped Carter for speeding near 96th Street and Western Avenue, and found that he had no valid driver's license in his possession, and his actual license was revoked. Police took him into custody and said that because he had prior convictions for driving on a suspended and revoked license, the State's Attorney's Office approved his charge as a felony. Reports also said police charged Carter with driving under the influence of alcohol because when they approached the car, they noticed his slurred speech and smelled alcohol on his breath. Police said they observed what looked like slobber on his face and in the corner of his mouth. When police spoke to Carter, he said, "It's over with," took the keys out of the ignition, handed them to the officer, and got out of the car, having to hold on to the car to stand up, according to the report. Police said Carter later refused a breathalyzer test.
