Metra Train Smashes Cart Full of Cans But Man Escapes With His Life

Train dragged cart for 100 yards.

A Metra train struck a cart of tin cans Monday afternoon in Oak Lawn but the man pushing the cart escaped with his life.

The train was traveling through the crossing at Kilbourn Avenue and Southwest Highway and blew its horn but the man walked past the gates and into the train's path. The train dragged the cart about 100 yards. The accident took place shortly after 1 p.m.

"The man was not hit but was pulled a few feet,” Oak Lawn Police Division Chief Michael Kaufmann told Sun-Times Media. A Metra spokeswoman said the man was taken to the hospital.
