Basement Fire Damages Evergreen Park Home

Residents escaped unharmed when smoke was noticed coming from the basement of an Evergreen Park home this morning.

No one was injured in a fire this morning in the 10200 block of South Turner Avenue in Evergreen Park, said Evergreen Park Fire Chief Ronald Kleinhaus.

The blaze started in the utility room in the basement of the single-family home."Somewhere in the vicinity of the furnace or water heater," Kleinhaus said.

A resident of the home called the fire department about 8:20 a.m. after smoke was spotted coming from a laundry chute leading to the basement.

The basement sustained major damage and there was damage on the home’s upper levels.

"We had to cut a couple of holes in the roof for ventilation because there were no windows in the basement," Kleinhaus said.

"There will have to be some work done before anyone can move back into the home," Kleinhaus said.

Firefighters are still investigating to pinpoint the cause of the fire.

The owner of the home is one of the former owners of the building that now houses Durbin's on Kedzie Avenue in Evergreen Park and they told Evergreen Park Patch editor Renita Young they lost thousands of dollars of sports memorabilia in the fire.
